Why dont fighters cover on ground?

(double post..)

...case in point of course being Overeem tonight.

When you're on your back, and fighter's standing above you trying to leaping in and throw bombs at your face, why not protect it? The laziness just baffles me...

why don't more fighters use the fetal position defense?

because they are to busy being punched in the face to worry about defense.

^ not when they're lying flat on their back and the opponent is standing above them waiting to strike... that's what I'm talking about. As the standing fighter dives in, why not up-kick AND cover your face with your elbows/forearms? For some reason Overeem kept his hands in a crucifix position instead, and look what happened...

now that I gave you my smart-ass answer, maybe I can help you out with the real reason.

When someone jumps in like that, you want to get an underhook so you can come up. If you cover, the standing opponent will get cross-sides or possibly mount. Unfortunately trying to get the underhook can get you punched in the head sometimes.

punches SteveD in the head

Too much training straight JJ, not enough training grappling with strikes.
