Why is Japan building up its navy?

As the balance of power in Asia swings towards China, Japan is building one of the most modern and powerful naval forces in the world.

In the aftermath of WWII, the US imposed a settlement on Japan, supposed to "cure" it of its war-making abilities.

In a new constitution, the country renounced war forever. But in 2013, Japan scrambled fighters 267 times to intercept incoming Chinese aircraft.

to create a hegemon in that region to counter china

to create security because across the pond they have a fat, useless 20 or 30 something year old child maniac in charge of a huge army and nuclear weapons.

because the US needs them to be stronger

If you don't defend yourself you gonna get raped

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's push for collective self-defense by altering Tokyo's war-renouncing constitution.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Japanese counterpart in Tokyo on Sunday, Hagel said Japan was playing a proactive role in contributing to global and regional peace and stability.

The interesting part of the video is the Japanese Government's efforts to change the school curriculum.  Denying Japanese aggression in WWII, the nanjing massacre, sex slaves etc to condition future generations.  You would think that, in the age of the internet, this would be a difficult thing to achieve.

Perfectly entitled to protect their interests.  If they did it with a Gundam I would cream my pants.

the Nanjing massacre thing, I think they're just disputing the number of people killed. The PRC is claiming 300K. I think the Allied war tribunal said 150K.

as for sex slaves, most of them were prostitutes. Prostitution was legal in Japan back then. I'm sure some were coeerced or kidnapped but a vast majority of them were willing volunteers just like you see whores close to many military bases today.

Be gone with your common sense. Replace it with a dick joke immediately.

With China and India building Aircraft Carriers, and the lunatics in North Korea building missiles that can strike Japan, it only makes sense that the Japanese want a strong navy.

Japan sets out plans to become regional F-35 maintenance hub

Japan and the United States are considering establishing a regional depot in Japan for Asia-Pacific based users of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter, a Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) official told IHS Jane's on 8 April.

The move to host a maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facility in Japan follows the 1 April decision by Japan's cabinet to approve new guidelines on defence equipment exports.

A draft outline of the MoD's strategy on F-35 sustainment, which has been obtained by IHS Jane's , says it will work to co-ordinate with relevant countries to establish a regional MRO facility in Japan.

China criticises Japan's X-band radar system plan

China has criticized a Japanese plan to install a cutting-edge U.S. missile defense radar system. China's Foreign Ministry says it could harm regional stability and upset the strategic balance.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said, "Some countries or blocs in the region, under the pretext of a DPRK nuclear threat, have unilaterally set up anti-missile systems or are conducting bloc cooperation.

"This is not conducive to nuclear non-proliferation and stability in the region, and will have an extremely negative impact on the global strategic balance."

The governor of Kyoto endorsed the radar plan last week. The X-band radar system would based in the Kyoto region, and would boost Japan's ability to track and intercept missiles from across the Sea of Japan.

In February, Japan and the U.S. government announced plans to deploy the radar system within the year.

The X-band radar system has a range of up to 4,000 kilometers. It can trace launched missiles and lock the route so that the missiles can be intercepted.
