up until this point, the ufc has only given the appearance of trying to decrease steroid abuse...but as everyone knows, scheduled testing is almost the same as no testing since its not difficult to cycle off in time for testing
but now, its not just an issue of fighter safety, its becoming an issue of dollars and cents to the ufc, which unfortunately, is perhaps the only thing that will motivate the ufc to make some changes
dana said they already do a lot and its too hard to implement a more rigorous testing program, but that is total bs....they do not have to test every fighter for every event, they just need to implement a randomized system of testing, where any fighter at any time can be subject to someone walking up to their door with a cup in their hand...this can be done in a way that is both administratively simple and cost effective...
the second step is for the ufc to take a more hardlined stance..if you get busted, you are out of the ufc PERIOD...just passing the buck to the nsac with their short term suspension is a slap on the wrist that doesnt act as a deterrent
if you couple random testing with the threat of being out of the UFC altogether, that will cut down on the abuse immediately in a very significant way
and for the ones that want to just brush this issue off...grow up...as shown in the nfl studies, concussions can cause long lasting brain damage that destroys peoples lives and i would venture to guess that the per capita concussion rate in mma is FAR greater than the per capital concussion rate in the NFL... and yes, super roided athletes can and do cause more damage than a natural athlete...the nsac and ufc should do something now before they get too much blood on their hands as this generation's mmas fighters become older and we start to see the long term effects...
Roids should be legal imo. Watching 2 roid monkeys go after it is awesome.
I Agree that random drug testing should be introduced.
I think IF AO gets away with this (I know it's a big ask) Then Nick Diaz should be able to get out of his weed issue.
In college, we were subjected to random drug tests.
Wrestling for a top 5 Division I school, I have never seen steroids; I wouldn't have known where to get them; and I didn't personally know any wrestler who was using.
That system works pretty well.
Unfortunately realistically trying to fix the PED issues would cause more problems than it would solve for the UFC.
At least at first it would.
Bad for business for too many guys to get busted.
If you can get away with it you want just enough testing to seem like something is being done but not enough to decimate your roster and screw things up. That's why the NFL and NBA do things they way they do...they have basically joke programs that are handled with no transparency. MLB had to do more just because of public outcry.

I ran track at a D1 school with a big-time football program and it was funny how the track guys and swimmers seemed to get all the random testing instead of the football team.

That's really interesting.
I can only speak for wrestling and wrestlers. Didn't hang out with the other athletes too much.
We definitely got tested.
