Will UFC ever get rid of the Belt?

Will we ever reach a point in MMA where there is no belt, maybe 20-30 years from now just a GP every 6 months? Phone Post 3.0

That business model has been wildly successful in MMA.

No. Just cant see why. Everyone wants that strap. Phone Post 3.0

Only if they fight for something else. Maybe.

I think due to regularity of injury and amount of time off between fights we will never see a "season". I think it would be ideal to have a season but not at the rate at which these guys fight it just isn't possible. The fight pay would have to go way down for that to ever happen. Phone Post 3.0

no. what are they gonna give out a trophy? even PRIDE had belts even with the trophy and flowers.

I don't see how they could. If one night tournaments with a large cash prize were a possibility, I would be all for it. Won't happen though. Phone Post 3.0

Because a lot of the time they don't mean anything? No1 is unbeatable and no1 is that guy... Styles make fights Phone Post 3.0

Um, no. They're the only thing that mean anything, and what you're saying about styles making fights would be equally applicable to tournaments.

From a promotional standpoint, the problem with tournaments that involve all your top guys is that all but one of them leave on a loss, making it difficult to build up new guys. Maybe it could still work if it happened every year, but matchmakers have a difficult time keeping major fights intact without having to match the relatively rigid schedule a tournament would take.

If someone gets injured in a tournament, sure you can have an alternate take their place, but how much did that tournament really accomplished if the number one seed exited prematurely because of injury?

You just can't base everything on a team model like that, it doesn't work that way.

I'd welcome the occasional grand prix, but as far as making it the business model of a promotion and taking away belts, there's far too many cons in going to a tournament-based model as a regular thing for it to ever be worth it.

It wouldn't increase my interest in the sport anyway.

Ive always thought, that they should say fuck the belt and just have the best match ups possible. The belt gets in the way of a lot of good timed fights.
We all know JBJ is the best 205er, but DC has the belt.....no need for it.

Why would they? Doesn't make any sense.
