I'm half an hour to an hour in, escaped the dungeon and am walking around with Triss and Roche. So far I'm not sold. It seems a bit janky, and too linear. Too many conversations about too many funny names, and combat -- as in every melee game -- just feels like mashing the X button.
Does it get better or is it not for me?

I thought it was a fantastic game and anything but linear. Your choices tend to have real and definite consequences.

I thought combat was pretty good actually. More about positioning etc. than anything else. Maybe just not for you?
Tell I can tell you it does get better from there. The choices become more dramatic and the game opens up a bit after the first town hub. I must admit it's no Skyrim though. I think you'll be in a better place to decide whether to continue after the next couple hours of gameplay.
In terms of the combat I found it's what you make of it. Mixing up the skill trees is satisfying. I went alchemist/swordsman and it worked out... Mostly. I know a friend who maxed out the sword tree and was happy with the combat.
The storyline is intricate and has lots of threads. The quests however are a bit more linear.
Yeah, right after I made that post I got to Flotsam and it opened up. We'll see how it goes. I'm still kind of jumping around trying to decide what game to settle into as my first PC game experience in a million years: Arkham City, Witcher 2, or Skyrim. I might run through BF3 just for the hell of it since it's so graphically impressive and it supposedly only takes 5-6 hours.
I'm waiting for this to come to the Xbox.
From what I read, it seems like its a good story with decent combat. Cool.
I've been looking for a game that combines skyrim and dark souls.
It sort of reminds me of a mature version of Fable.
Orcus I recently got back into PC and bought Skyrim and BF3 on the same day. I've put in 15hours on Skyrim and close to 100 on BF3, guess its just what I was in the mood to play. I'd say nothing better than Skyrim for single player experience, and if you know anyone playing BF3 it is amazing to play when you know your squadmates. Sadly I haven't had much of the urge to really sit down and dig into Skyrim more.
I got bored of skyrim after a while(albeit 80 hours lol)
Dark souls I'm still not bored of yet.
I want to find a game basically that's dark souls with an awesome story.
Asking too much?
Hey orcus, didn't you end up buying dark souls? What did you think?
Much prefer witcher 2 to Skyrim. Stronger story, stronger characters, visually superior and much more polished overall.
