Since the Olympics are on, I was just curious. Theoretically, if MMA became an olympic sport, would he allow his guys to compete? Do you think he would, even if guys from other organizations did so as well? If this ever happened, it may be the only way a UFC champ were to fight an active champ from another org. It would be great exposure for whoever did make it. Of course, by the time anything like that happens, the whole industry could be different.
I don't see why not.
It's once every 4 years, wouldn't be that hard to anticipate and plan around.
GEE ES PEE!
DreamerMMA - I don't see why not.

Because I could still see them not wanting a prized champ losing to someone no one knows about.
I doubt it. I'm sure he has the same opinion about the Olympics as he does Fedor with the Sambo comps. If you're in the UFC, that's all he wants you to be involved with.

I agree. The Yankees aren't exactly in love with the WBC. Not the same thing necessarily but fighters in the UFC work for the company. They aren't exactly independent contractors.
Would'nt you think olympic mma would be like olympic boxing, amateurs only?
I don't think we'll see pro MMA fighters in the Olympics any time soon. if MMA were to be brought into the olympics, it'd most likely be amateurs. at least at first.
Oh. and dana would not want his top guys being out of PPVs for that long and risking them getting injured.

You know, a pro fighter or two also wrestles and also boxes... I hear there's even an MMA fighter out there somewhere that uses judo!
Boxers in the Olypics are all amateurs. I'd predict them do the same with MMA.
blue63 -thforklift - They aren't exactly independent contractors.Yes they are.
Oh yeah? Then maybe you know something I don't, because last time I checked, if you're under contract with the UFC you can't fight for other promoters without their permission (which of course you wouldn't get if you were on the roster). If there was an actual Olympics with this sport in it (which I don't want to see), there is NO way UFC fighters would be permitted to compete in it.
"Boxers in the Olypics are all amateurs. I'd predict them do the same with MMA."
Exactly, Id love to see it one day
Pointless debating this cause I can say with 99.9& certainty that MMA will not be in the Olympics in my lifetime (and I plan on living for another 60 years or so)
They let fighters compete at Abu Dhabi, I don't see why they wouldn't let someone, say, wrestle (since I know you had GSP in mind when making this thread).
Easy question - if it makes his company money, yes, if it doesn't no. This shit isn't that complicated.

yeah i think you don't understand what an independant contractor is.

that's great in a perfect world. but it's not reality, nor is it the case.
Dana doesn't fuckin own these people lol. they have the ability to negotiate things like ADCC, Sambo or whatever else they feel is important. Dana has to be flexible sometimes to secure the people to begin with.
good example is him saying they allowed fedor to fight sambo, and that wasn't a problem.
they cant because the olympics is always amatuers, pro boxers cant go in there and box so i dont see how pro mma guys would be able to....but then again pro bball players go in, i dont know how it all works.
ive been begging for mma in the olympics for years, maybe one day....
i understand what an independent contractor is in terms of taxes (believe me, i was paid like one partially last year and it cost me a lot of $$ when I did my taxes). perhaps that was a bad choice of words on my part. i guess what i mean is that when you fight for the UFC, you work for the UFC and are bound to their wishes. if they don't want you to fight somewhere or appear in something, as long as its contractual, you can't.
houston alexander was not a UFC-signed fighter when he fought outside the UFC. he was brought back and signed for one fight to lose to Kimbo.

Umm, it has been stated that the Sambo competitions were of zero issue what so ever in the Fedor negotiations, it was the co-promotion and Fedor/M-1 wanting 50% of all revenue brought in from any show Fedor headlined without investing a dime of capital into the venture to begin with that was the deal breaker. Lorenzo said the Sambo competitions weren't a problem.
"I think that Fedor, right now, the word is he wants to fight in this Sambo event, but I won't let him fight in it if he's with us. I think he's going to wait until he fights in this thing in October, November, and we'll probably come to a deal with him at the end of this year or the beginning of next year."

DW's thoughts on GSP and the Olympics:
Meanwhile, White gave his blessing upon hearing of 28-year-old welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre’s aspirations to make the 2012 Olympic wrestling team for Canada.
“I think it would be great if he won a medal,” said White. “Guys that are under contract, they come to us and we sit down and we figure things out. Listen, the thing is if you’re under contract with me, (it) doesn’t mean I don’t want you doing anything else in your life.”
