Wow account hacked...

I have no idea how this could've happened.  I have NEVER bought gold.  I had a VERY secure password.  I hadn't played in probably a month.  I logged in today and all my toons were wiped of all their gear and anything in their bags/banks worth anything.  All my gold gone too.

What are the chances I'm going to get this stuff back?

add ons

I'm pretty sure they are very good about getting your shot back for you. Phone Post

only addons I had were auctioneer and a bag one (bagnon or onebag).  these aren't legit?

I guessing this was the way mine was hacked too...

i personally never trusted auctioneer, or gatherer, or anything that collected a lot of data.

Keylogger, run malwarebytes and avast.

Pretty sure it was a trojan.  I remember surfing the warlocks den site a few months back and being warned that it tried to install something malicious on my box.  then my antivirus subscription ran out and I never updated it.  probably went back to that site (as I've used it for reference for years and forgot about the aforementioned warning), and I'm guessing it installed whatever.

fucking AVG identified the blizzard downloader as malware though and I stupidly accepted that.  it removed it and 4 other files from my system so now I have to reinstall wow.

fucking pain in the ass.

 Authenticator

Jockey - authenticator can be hacked too, I have an authenticator and then logged in on my flat mate's computer, I then got a password change request e-mail at 6 am the following morning. I didn't approve the request of course but its scary that those fucking hackers got authenticator code.

fucking hackers.

They do it by keylogging the last one used. The code stays for a few minutes after it disappears of the authenticator. It's rare for it to be successful over all the ones they have issued.

I mean if someone goes through ALL that work to steal my video game toon they can have them.

It gets silly after a point.

that's kind of the reason i don't trust the major add ons. I know technically speaking, processes running while you are playing aren't a threat to steal your login info, but they could piggy back a keylogger in there with out you ever being suspicious.

I mean, it's obvious a lot of time and effort are put into some of these add ons, yet they give them away. I'm sure someone has broken down the installation files or whatever to make sure they are 100% safe, or have they?

I started to go through the Auctioneer code last night but then thought to myself "hmm, feels like I'm at work.  fuck this".  I'm not about to work at home for free because of a video game.

addons, phishing emails (and i've seen some DAMN good fakes), wow-related forums that you may have used the same pass/email for, keyloggers can all get your password

i remember reading something about even the authenticator getting hacked a while ago (much harder, more rare of course)

but seriously, if you sign up for gaming related (wow specifically, news sites, guild sites, arena junkie type) sites using your bnet email and either ur email pass or bnet pass, that puts it at risk as squat said

even if the company is legit, one person could try to look at the database of users to steal

i remember back in Diablo 2 days when my buddy made a "clan" and had everyone sign up for a forum which could report the logins/passes of their forum accounts to him. he would then cross-check those to battle.net and ended up stealing like six accounts from "new recruits" (and this was in a game where nothing was soulbound or account bound)

account thefts probably jumped big time when blizzard switched to the bnet system. best thing to do is create a gmail account that is just used for your bnet account and nothing else.

Yeah happened to 3 people in my previous guild on the same day - which was kinda whack.

Authenticator is your friend! Get one.

Anyone know if you can use one (the same) authenticator for 2 different wow accounts?

Squat is mostly correct, however, no way am I stopping from visiting Empornium (well cheggit now).

10 bucks for authenticator peace of mind is a pretty small price to pay.

Mako, nup, 1 per account far as I know.

Squat is right. I played for years and never had one sign of getting hacked.

Authenticators are free on the iPhone or most smartphones. Phone Post
