Those were clean punches, he was standing behind Melendez and somehow Gilbert is supposed to know he wants to stand them up, not to mention why the fuck are you standing them up when he is smashing his face in. They need to have a type of TUF show looking for decent refs and judges, shit is getting too stupid.
How many brawl threads can people make?
wipes eye on Mario's shirt
I was wondering the same thing.
If you're gonna stand them up, stand them up! Aoki got smashed in the face at least two times during these types of scenarios, and Lord only knows if it's because he was slow with separating the action, since Aoki seemed to be distracted by him.
And this begs the question: Why even stand someone up from a buttscoot?
It's a legit technique, and it's pushing the action. Who cares how it looks?
I watched it in slow mo, to Yamasaki's credit he was telling them to stop a few times actually.
edit: NM
Agreed. That was an absolutely terrible ref call and possibly robbed Gilbert of a stoppage.
Big John is pretty much the only good ref in MMA.

I did not agree with standing Aoki up for butt-scooting. He was moving aggressively towards Melendez - Let Melendez figure out how to deal with it.
That was a poorly reffed fight.
If someone butt scoots then you should be allowed to kick/knee them in the face. Until the rules allow that, butt scooting is illegitimate as it stalls the action. What was Gil supposed to do, dive right into his guard? Leg kick him for five minutes? Circle around while Aoki chases him? Butt scooting with the current rule set more or less forces the opponent to avoid and stall or dive right into guard. However, unlike pulling guard it doesn't put them in that situation through any skill or engagement, it does it through manipulation of the rules. If melendez was allowed to stomp/soccer kick Aoki then the butt scooting would be legitimate.
^^^It's a relatively new form of aggressively pursuing your opponent - a new challenge to figure out. I'd like to see how it develops.

It's not aggressively pursuing anything as the rules make it so your opponents really have no options. I would be fine with it if fighters were allowed to kick butt scooters in the head.
Actually Mario has proven to be an excellent ref.
usually Mario is a pretty good ref but I've always thought he's too passive. Meekly saying "stop. stop." is ridiculous. Speak louder and boldly intervene like Big John.

everyone who tranes ufc knows that stand and bang is the default mma position. all that other stuff is gay, make em stand and bang more
Consistency was not his friend in the Aoki fight. Sometimes he'd let him but scoot for a bit and others he'd jump in right away and stand them up.
Early on he used to fuck up a lot but the last couple years he's really been a consistent and good ref, but the wheels came off last night IMO. Hopefully he recovers but I think they need to try and find some more good refs AND judges.
