WWE on Brocks win

"LAS VEGAS - In a stunning upset, Brock Lesnar became the first man to capture both the WWE Championship and the UFC Heavyweight Championship when he defeated UFC fan favorite Randy "The Natural" Couture on Saturday night in Sin City.

Lesnar, dubbed "The Next Big Thing" upon his arrival in WWE, earned the moniker and his first WWE Championship in 2002 after besting The Rock at SummerSlam. Thanks in large part to the backing of the WWE Universe, the former college wrestling phenomenon went on to regain the title twice, both times against Kurt Angle, once at WrestleMania in 2003 and then six months later on SmackDown.

For Lesnar, the road to UFC gold proved surprisingly short. Within roughly six months, the former WWE Superstar climbed to the top of the ultimate fighting heap, capping his ascent with the upset victory over Couture.

Critics have noted that many of the fights on the UFC pay-per-view ended in the first round, leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content. The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious under-card fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a "crap shoot" in regards to filling the full three hours.

For his part, Lesnar took the encouragment of the WWE Universe and the hard lessons forged during his fiery time at WWE and showed UFC and the world why he is not only a man of mettle but also a former three-time WWE Champion."

LMAO at WWE thinking it had anything to do with Brock winning!

lol....this should be great troll fodder!

LOL @ even wrestling fans think the WWE's full of shit.

tanjo - I don't think the article was self-congratulating. It just stated that he is a former WWE champ, and that's true. Wrestlers and wrestling fans have no reason not to be proud of one of their former stars for his accomplishment in a professional sport.. What's the big deal?

I don't thinks that's the arguement.

Ummm..............

I guess UFC PPV's would be less of a "crap shoot" if the entire thing was staged.

Now if you excuse me I'm gonna go jerk off to kayfabe.

LOL at the 'dearth of hearty competition' in a three hour show, where is the competition, hearty or otherwise in a WWE event? Dumb bastards.

chrisdaniels85 - lmao he's a 3 time champ because they decided to let him win the belt 3 times. I love Lesnar but I hate pro-wrestling.

Ding fucking ding. It kills me to see somebody list WWE champion as an accomplishment. It's like saying the crew from Cheers actually lost to the crew from Gary's Old Town Tavern in softball on Cheers.

I read an interview with Ole Anderson, who apparently had a lot to do with what went on behind the scenes in the NWA/WCW. Apparently with Ted Turner taking over, he decided to make Ric Flair champ so Turner decided to pay him an extra $100,000 for the accomplishment. Apparently Ted Turner's not 100% as smart as we thought.

I'm not anti-Lesnar due his time in the WWE, like a lot of folks here, but that is one of the dumbest things I've ever read. "Encouragement from the WWE universe"? Are they kidding?

That's why they went to court to break his no-compete clause after the NFL didn't workout, right? (though that was so he could wrestle in Japan, but still)

It's amazing how unpredictable things become when they're not scripted.

It did--no way he gets a title shot so quickly without having been in WWE!

I for one was glad that there were some quick finishes as we got to see some really good undercard fights along with the really good main card fights.

To be fair, whilst holding the WWE championship is not an athletic achievement like winning the UFC title or a Boxing title or a Championship, it is something to be proud of within that industry.

If you're the champion then it means that the company thinks you can draw, and have made yourself believable as a top guy.

In that regard it's more like winning an Oscar or an Emmy.
