X-Com Fans? Chimera Squad Dropped Today

Chimera Squad came out today, picked it up for $10 on Steam earlier this week.  Seems more of an experimental side-project than X-Com 3 for certain.

Definitely a change the formula, with a set squad of characters instead of a team of mooks you are sending out to get killed possibly.  Breach mechanic seems interesting, just worried it might be overused.

Only through the tutorial so far.   But only ten bucks and does scratch that turn-based strategy itch.

I'll check it out.

Falling Skies was a legit TBS. I wish they would rerelease it for PC or modern consoles.

I love XCom. The "mooks" were one of my favorite parts. I would name the better ones after friends and then inevitably shed a tear when some alien mind-fucked them into going crazy or tossed a grenade nearby.

Hell yeah!  I did that as well.

I also made a squad of all my coworkers, and then gave them derogatory nicknames like "Meat shield" and "Bait" and sent them off to die, and then would send them screenshots of them dying.

HR got involved...they took my side.  :)

I picked it up. It's ok so far. I severaly messed up an early escort mission and it set me far enough back I'm probably going to restart. I had the volume off and didn't realize it was an escort mission, so I sat there and went through wave after wave.

I played for an hour or so and got bored with it.

They really need to adjust their hit percentages.

First, I can be right next to a guy who has a small amount of cover and it's 45% to hit, then there's a guy across a warehouse that's 75% with the same amount of cover when I'm using a pistol. The percentages do not add up to the visuals.

Second, I can consistently hit 50-60% better than I can hit 70-90% hit percentages. That's just dumb.

Just refunded it.

Xcom's gameplay doesn't translate well to a close combat setting and the missions are extremely repetitive; breach, clear room, breach, retrieve object then exfiltrate. Over and over.

The level of ham-fisted wokeness is kind of grating and pathetic...

The two starting characters? STRONG WAMMAN OF COLOUR!

The Mayor? STRONG WAMMAN OF COLOUR!

Director of X-Com? STRONG WAMMAN!

Police Commissioner? STRONG WAMMAN!

Number of White Males on the entire X-Com roster? ONE!

WOKE!

I didn't even notice the "wokeness". It's a game, not the OG, so I don't really notice that shit and just play. It doesn't anger me in the least.

The game is shit, though. And I don't see myself playing it much.

...and the entire scenario is that hard working undocumented migrants (literal aliens) are being victimised by a white/Earth supremacist hate movement.

I only noticed because they use “their” as the only pronoun, which reads awkwardly, but maybe makes sense in a game with aliens and vat bred hybrids.

game is decent.  If you like XCOM you’ll like this.  I miss progressing quickly up the tech tree and the the urgency.  I also miss assembling my own squad and figuring out the configuration I preferr.  There’s much more of a feeling of making due with what I’m given rather than running an all ranger or all sniper squad for shits and giggles.

I stopped playing and started playing Gears Tactics instead. It's no XCOM 2 by any means, but MS Studios seemed to pull off what Chimera Squad was attempting.

I have that in my queue. I’m enjoying this well enough to continue.   I never played more than the first Gears game.  Do I need to be well versed in the IP to enjoy it?

Not at all. It's pretty standalone story wise.

The hit percentages beng so far off killed Chimera Squad for me. Being a strategy game, having high percentage shots consistently miss and low percentage shots consistently hit took the strategy out of the game for me.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t run into that so far.  Maybe they fixed it in a patch.  What’s messing me up is the tech tree progression seems slower than the difficulty progression.  So right now my guys are running into missions with base level gear against more advanced enemies.  On a breach I’m pumping in 3-4 shotgun blasts just to drop one enemy.

Kept running into too many bugs that were fucking up missions entirely like Cherub getting stuck to things and not being able to move, or random unit teleportation, or things still in full cover despite all their cover being destroyed by explosives.

Didn't uninstall, but did got back to playing X-Com2, lol

I'll wait for a patch, but hey...it was only 10 bucks.

Yeah, for $10 it’s pretty good value.  I ran into two bugs last night.  One was the game locked up and that sucked.  The other was I upgraded to Mastercrafted Shotguns (someone is a 40k fan) and the loadout still said “Enhanced Shotguns” but the description was correct.
