"Xander" Flower Sweep

I've watched youtube videos of the flower sweep variation that Xande does by grabbing the gi pants by the foot. Does Saulo show this sweep on his first gi instructional series? Andre does a version of it on his new set and I find myself obsessed with this sweep and how effective it is.

Pretty sure Saulo has it in revolution 1 series.

Lavato Jr has some youtube videos showing some nice follow ups with this sweep too.

It's in Saulo's first set. I think the third technique in the guard section.

I remember seeing Jake Mackenzie use it well in one of his x-combat matches I found on youtube. I'm at work right now, so unfortunately I can't post the match.

I could be wrong but i think Rodrigo Gracie shows this in path to black belt.

its my favorite sweep

I think if you watch some of Rey's old matches at blue and purple he does this sweep a lot. I do it the way I learned it from him, by putting the foot on the hip, and I've never had success doing it the way I see Saulo and Xande do it, although I think that is the more common way.

I say try both and see which suits you better. My goal when I do it is to fold my opponent, while I think Saulo's way is to block the opponent from basing to one side and then to shove him over that side with the shin coming in from behind the shoulder.

Which way do you guys like to do it?

I first learned it the Ribeiro way since I'm with that association. I later learned what sounds like the version Andre does from a Braulio dvd.

I couldn't get the foot on the hip version to work. I'm positive I didn't understand it completely but I tried it for about three weeks and it seemed like more work.

The thing about the Saulo's version is its more about proper kuzushi than "shoving".

If you do it right its effortless and for uke it feels like he's just falling into a hole.

Xande hitting it in competition

Check out the Xande segment in the Arte Suave documentary. He shows a clip of him hitting it in competition and then does an awesome job of explaining the technique and its details.

i love this sweep, i just cant seem to keep control over the wrist i'm gripping and they seem to still be able to post with that hand. anyone else have this problem?

The key to solving this is to control the sleeve and locking your elbow to your hip. You don't push his arm across because the stronger guy will win this match up. Instead simply lock your elbow and his arm will be stuck.

This plus think of pushing his wrist to your belly button.

i'll have to try that, sounds like it should work. it was definitely a detail i was missing. thanks guys!

I grab at the elbow and drive the arm across.

I think that the way I do it emphasizes "kazushi", too (I discuss it during this segment on the DVD), but I also feel that the foot on the hip makes it easier to force the sweep if the opponent isnt moving.

Kinda like in this match.

andre, i can't make that elbow control work at all. i've tried it since watching your DVD but i can't seem to feel comfortable with that grip. i did really enjoy how you talked about when you like going for the sweep etc.

A little detail I teach that makes a world of difference

When people grab the sleeve they usually use a hook grip. This allows for a lot of movement of ukes hand and arm as your only contact is fabric.

Try this next time. Use a hook grip..but keep rolling your fist forward until your knuckles are pressing hard into the back of his wrist.

Now have him move his arm around and feel the difference in control

It also puts you in a bio-mechanically stronger position and forces you to keep his arm in your centerline
