It seems to me that the ufc is trying to punish A silva. This fight is pointless. If Silva gets beat, it hurts the 185 champ. If SIlva wins, forrest drops fromt he rankings but doesnt strength the 205 division because Silva isn't going to ever fight the champ.
What's the point?

^^ this.
because its a draw and should be an exciting fight on paper
Its a big draw and a big opportunity for Anderson Silva in that Forrest is a very well known and popular fighter. And if he loses, it shouldn't hurt him at all at 185.
Tough position for Forrest though. But I guess the appeal there is that he has a chance to beat one of the, if not the, best pound for pound fighters out there.
Anderson himself says he wants the toughest fights.
In case yall didn't catch the last two Silva fights, the man is itching for a challenge. Fine, give him the biggest LHW, and former champion and fan favorite and see how he does. If he wins, it might actually improve his PPV draw (which is oddly low for a champion). If he loses, he can focus on his own weight class.
The guy with not much to win is Forrest, so props to him for taking the fight.
Ryan MacLeod - I love this fight, but it was also one of my pet peeves about Pride. Champions would lose.. but still be champs. This is different than what I think you were talking about because in Pride there were times where two guys in the same weight class would fight and it was just a non title bout. As much as I loved Pride, that sucked badly. I don't ever remember this happening in the UFC short of a guy not making weight, off the top of my head
But I can easily overlook that minor annoyance if it means more superfights like this.

You're kidding right?
It's a win/win situation for Forrest, he has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
JT42382 - It's a win/win situation for Forrest, he has nothing to lose and everything to gain.I think its a much tougher position for him, personally. He is the more famous and popular fighter. He is the heavier guy. He is coming off of a loss
Another one and he is 0-2 in his last two and he just lost to a guy that is a weight class below him.
That's one way of looking at it.
The other is, of course, that Silva is possibly the best fighter in the world so a win over him certainly has substance.
But there is a lot more on the line for Griffin, imo
ShaqNoob -No, I'm not kidding. The guy at a higher weight class rarely has anything to gain when his opponent moves up to face him. Obviously, he gets paid, but it doesn't do much to get him back in line for a title shot. Why would you think I was kidding?Zedlepln The guy with not much to win is Forrest, so props to him for taking the fight.
