Yoga and Weight Training

I find weight training COMPLETELY useless (for ME at least). I was wondering what some of your stances on the matter is though. Also, I randomly came across this thread in some forum where they discuss the subject somewhat:

By the way, my main question is: for those of you that practice yoga, do you also lift weights? I find that you cannot successfully do both - it's gotta be either or (and I've obviously chosen yoga).

sorry I got distracted

I do both and don't have a problem with it...what seems to be the problem specifically?

i have never met someone who finds weight training completely useless. Could you please explain?

Why not both? I do weights 3-4 days a week and yoga 2-3; they both compliment each other and my JJ tremendously...

I did Yoga once in Brentwood with Christy Turlington.

She's fairly hot.

I do Yoga and lift weights. I am neither strong nor flexible, but I'm seeing little improvements all the time. Love doing both.

And by the way, there is no better place to meet chicks than at a Yoga Studio.

"And by the way, there is no better place to meet chicks than at a Yoga Studio."

hummmmm look for a yoga place close to my home

Yoga is a fantastic supplement to BJJ, as is weight training.

I wish I had more time to do Yoga, even once a week and I find I get injured much less.

I also weight train once a week.

Okay, I find that with weight training, I cannot find my 'natural body weight' in which my body can perform optimally. I've weight lifted for most of my life and looked like this. However, along with the puffy-looking hypertrophied body, came the shortened muscles and stiffness (as well as a plethora of injuries including back pain). But with yoga, I have maintained my strength (if not became stronger) yet have become extremely flexible - relatively speaking. And while I don't look like "jacked" anymore, I actually prefer looking like this.

I've experimented with doing both (on two separate instances) but it never works out. I feel like they cancel each other out. Does anyone else feel this way?

yoga flame!

Does trying to give yourself a BJ qualify as Yoga?

Kostakio, best advice I can give you is to go find a qualified Personal Trainer and go through a thorough evaluation so that he/she can design a customized weight routine for you. Where do you live? We can help you find someone if you're interested.

Frankly if you are getting hurt all the time lifting weights, maybe you are doing something wrong?

Not all wieght training is the same. You can work for endurance, strength, mass, etc. Lower weight, higher reps might be more complementary to yoga.

Also, if you are losing flexibility and getting hurt lifting, then adding a better warm up and stretches before and after can help with that. The only times I've gotten hurt lifting were when I failed to warm up properly, or came back from some kind of injury (unrelated) too soon.

" As an athlete, you want strength "throughout a range of motion"."

I play sports/martial arts in addition to practice yoga. I just refuse to ever lift weights again. Useless, imo. Did Rickson Gracie lift weights? What about BJ Penn? Does he lift weights? I know there's a pic of Fedor Emelianenko circulating where he's in a (kettlebell) weight room but I have read (maybe on his own website) that he does not lift weights (aside from plyometric-type activities such as sledgehammer work, etc.). I'm just askin'.

BJ lifts weights.

In the face!

I haven't read any responses on this thread but I lift weights and do YOGA.

^ What's your weekly schedule like (no details)? How many times yoga and weights?

Prove it, Fabes!

My schedule is very tight but I lift 3 days a week, heavy cardio twice per week and HOT YOGA at least once per week as a way to ZEN a little bit.  This is all while doing BJJ 4 days per week and MT 3 times per week.  Twice a week the BJJ and MT are back to back classes.
