How can you say he had zero value offensively?
He played next to the greatest creator of offense ever… and still had a hell of a lot of big offensive games.
He wasn’t Dominique Wilkins in terms of offensive consistency – but when he was on he could hang with anybody, and was just a notch or 2 below the elite scorers.
Considering everything else he did, that’s pretty damn good.
He was more than just a transition scorer.
That’s a disingenuous statement.
Just because he was an elite transition play maker, doesn’t mean he couldn’t beat guys in the half court.
Ask Partick Ewing.
Pippen is one of the greatest defenders ever – one of the best all around players ever – arguably the greatest glue guy ever – and was the #2 guy on arguably the greatest duo in NBA history.
He had plenty of games where he was unstoppable on offense – especially before he hurt his back.
No, he wasn’t 70 or Kobe or GOAT Jordan.
But there are a ton of offensive focus players, who didn’t do half of what Scottie did literally everywhere else on the court.
Put it this way…
On a team with 1 or 2 elite scorers… I would argue there might not be a more valuable lynchpin than Pippen.
He stands out in that aspect… even moreso than Stockton IMO.
That puts Scottie in rare company.
Scorers are a dime a dozen.
If I’m drafting an all-time team, and I miss Jordan or Kobe – I know another big time scorer will come available.
Pippen’s contribution is much harder to duplicate.
Not saying he’s top 10, or even 20, in terms of individual greatness.
But in terms of value to his team… he is unquestionably one of the all time greats.
Shit… even Karl Malone said that Pippen would be the guy he would build a team around.
The players that played with and against him, as well as the coaches, have consistently praised him.
I’ll take their opinions over anonymous fans.
Also… when creating an “all time” team that will likely be full of elite sorcerers – you want a guy like Pippen to “fill in the gaps” and improve team chemistry, while being a defensive specialist.
And nobody does Pippen better than Pippen.
He wouldn’t need to be defended if he were given his due.
Even Jordan said that you can’t talk about his accomplishments without Pippen… because Scottie was the one guy who was right with him for all of it.
