My open guard game sucks, so please share your favorite sweeps and techniques to gain top position as well as any general tips that you think are vital to success from this position.
Thanks in advance!
Hook and sickle sweep if I can grab an ankle and a sleeve, balloon sweep if I can get both feet on the hips with both sleeves.
I love these 3 basic sweeps. They are a good base for developing an open guard.
I am by no means an open guard expert, but it is my favorite position. The one tip I will give you is that the learning curve for open guard is very high. When you first start out trying to use it, you will most likely get instantly passed into side by any decent guys. It takes a lot of time to get even reasonably good at it. With that said, I would just go to youtube and watch marcelos videos on butterfly sweeps, baseball slide/hook sweep, etc.
If you are a real beginner with open guard, I suggest you start with this video. It goes over basic concepts rather than specific techniques and really helps you understand the position before you just try to do a grab bag of sweeps and subs that you may not be able to pull off yet. This video really helped me understand how to position myself and hold the position long enough to pull off a sweep or sub.

Hope this helps. Good luck with open guard.
Don't know the name : feet on hips, double sleeve control, foot drops behind ankle, hand controls opposite ankle, push with foot on hip, pull ankle out

Voted up, thanks brother
I like to go to x guard from spider guard and then finish one of the many x guard sweeps.
I'm a huge fan of DLR and spider guard sweeps but with any open guard you need to really use your angles and get fully on your hips.
The good ol Maia Sweep. Not sure what the proper name is. Also a simple elevator.
The idiot sweep. 6:35 mark.
Tornado sweep
Collar-tie butterfly sweep
Sweeping into the leg drag from a spin-under, reverse X-guard or Jedi mind trick
