How does your academy promote students?
My school hits them during the training.
Some schools have stopped and done award ceremonies.
Some shools make you walk the line.
I hope the sport doesn't get watered down and people get handed belts after class.
BFH
I don't think anyone who's had a belt simply handed to them after class or told: "hey come to class with a new belt on next time" has ever complained about it!
Different teachers promote different ways. Some make a big deal out of promotions, some don't.
Probably the "lowest key" promotion I have ever seen was when Junior, my teacher & Marcello Alonso promoted Andre "Alemao" Vasconcellos to Black Belt. He was leading warm-ups. They interupted him, gave him his black belt and told him to keep doing warm-ups! LOL!
Coming from a traditional Jiujitsu backgroud, where Yellow Belt promotions were filled with all kinds of pomp & ceremony, I was like: Wow, that is a pretty casual promotion for a guy who is getting a Black Belt after 12-years!
BTW, I honestly don't know that getting "beaten" with the belt in BJJ is MORE traditional. I think it simply traditional in some lineages and not in others.
Is he called Alemao because he is from Alemao or is he german or something?
Professor Shen, can i just check you received the full payment for my 4th stripe ceremony, I can't remember if i checked the full marching band & dancing girls and the framed promotion portrait photograph with former vice-president Mondale option.
Of course it goes without saying i want those options.
Its different
Some schools hit you with the new belt in the back while you have to run through all the guys that are lined up while some other schools like mine affiliated with BB from(Carlson Gracie Sr lineage)
when somebody is recieving a lets say a blue belt ,then the instructor and all the blue belts and above the blue throw the guy...

That sucks! Getting a belt, ESPECIALLY your black belt should be a memorable moment. They could just as well have shoved his black belt under the bathroom door while he was taking a dump!
For stripes, our instructor will just stop between rolls and announce them. For belts, he will generally sneak up on the guy and slap him with the belt and stop the class so everyone can recognize the belt being given.
Then we all break boards with our face.
We have exams. They are published online. I walked into my blue and purple belt exams knowing exactly what was expected of me. I will do the same for my brown and black exams when I get there.
I like the exams because they hold us accountable. I would not have trained my North-South escapes so hard as a blue belt, but I knew that I would have to do rounds of them on the exam, and that I would be asked to demonstrate a certain number of solid, technical escapes during that time.
No mystery, no drama, just clear expectations...I like it a lot.
My instructor usually waits until there are a bunch of people ready, or overdue for promotion, and then hands out all the belts at once at a seminar or BBQ. It is nice because everyone is there and often some of our affiliate schools are there as well.

I can believe that. i mean, i've seen your face. You've been promoted a few times.
in our school you just get it after class if its a new belt. if its stripes its just random usually during rolling.

thats would be incredible... in fact i hope to god that when i get my black belt it is given to me in this fasion.
Well, I expect a speach, tears, laughter, admiration from females, etc. when I get mine.
well being as im from royce gracie lineage (gracie orlando) i probably wont get my black belt for another 10 years on top of the 5 i already have in anyway. i think my days of female admiration will be long gone by then haha.
Chicks dig the black belt, dude.
...don't they?
well lets hope so haha cause by then i def wont be getting any with my looks!
When my sons got their Black Belts in March, Pedro Sauer was testing them while the spring camp was going on in the rest of the school. He had already watched them roll for two days during the camp. He stopped them half way through and called everyone together. Then he made a few comments about wanting everyone to see the level they would be expected to perform at when they were ready for black belt. Then he had them go through the whole test for everyone at the camp. It was a very memorable occasion.
JSho - Is he called Alemao because he is from Alemao or is he german or something?
He's from San Paulo.
I don’t know why he is called “Alemao” even though I asked him. The best I could get was it had something to do with crop farming.
Alemao is a master of the loop choke.
I asked him once: "Do you know of a guy named Batata?" (who is well-known for his loop choke)
He said: “Do I know Batata…?” He went and got his cell phone showed it to me. It said: “Batata called”.
“He’s at my house right now!”
I miss Alemao. Awesome guy.
are you talking about the batata that lives in florida and is of de la riva lineage?
