Zuffa: brilliant business men

well who ever thought of the TUF concept and teamed up with SpikeTV

absolutely brilliant

and now they have 0wned PRIDE, another brilliant move. No wonder these guys are millionaires

They've done a helluva job.

They're doing great,no doubt about it,but I don't think they had anything to do with the trouble Pride has been in lately. Their investment has definitely paid off, more than I think even they imagined.

See above if 110million in income is billions and billions, then i guess you're right.

umm Income is how much they made in 1 year. They have been doing business for over two decades. You do you the math.

You might want to Search for there Net-worth as of the end of 2007. Might want to check Forbes billionaire section.

yeah there not there...there in debt 3.4 billion with their casino

Here's a great in-depth CNN money report on the Fertittas that was posted here recently:

http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/07/magazines/business2/stationcasinos.biz2/index.htm?postversion=2006110809

It's FRAT, but it really has a lot of very cool info on the Fertittas, and the whole thing's well worth the read.

Oh and I always thought the brothers were billionaires as well, since everyone called them that, including all the MMA media articles and even Joe Rogan on a UFC broadcast referred to them as billionaires.

But apparently the "brothers [are] worth more than $700 million."

So while still vastly wealthy, the 2 brothers are not quite technically billionaires, although I bet the Fertitta family as a whole would qualify.

Personally I really felt the UFC would take off once I heard the Fertittas had bought it.

They are so wealthy and so well-connected in the right places. One of the brothers used to be the Vice Chairman of the NSAC so you knew they'd pretty much have an automatic in there. And they were established big names in Vegas.

So I actually thought something like the TUF show was really long overdue, and I felt that with all of their resources, something like that should have been done much earlier, especially with the spate of similar reality programming all over TV (like Tough Enough).

But imo, the slowness and delays turned out to be a huge blessing in disguise as, while they were waiting for something to go through, Spike TV emerged as a network needing a male-brand identity.

In the beginning there was a lot of talk about being on FoxSports and ESPN and more established TV outlets, but Spike turned out to be the singularly perfect fit. Absolutely no other network, imo, would have worked out so well for the UFC.

Something like TUF and MMA might have gotten lost in the shuffle and not marketed properly or exposed nearly as much it was on Spike, which revolved its whole brand identity around UFC - because it didn't have anything else yet.

Networks like ESPN and Foxsports have plenty of alternative programming.

So I think it was a combination of a lot of hard work first laying the groundwork, and then a perfect coincidence of need between the UFC and Spike that has sent UFC's popularity to these heights.

Oh and again from that article, check out this move which, imo, was their singularly defining stroke of risk-taking genius:

"Their pitch was turned down by every network. So they made Spike TV, the only channel specifically designed for overly testosteroned young men, an offer it couldn't refuse: The Fertittas agreed to produce the $10 million show themselves; Spike could just air it with no production costs.

The show the Fertittas put together, called Ultimate Fighter, debuted last year, became the anemic channel's first hit"

The preeminent brilliance of the Fertittas seems to be that they are unafraid to take high-roller risks that yield potentially high reward (although they have also incurred some prodigious debt for some of their other ventures).

So I guess they believe that if you're gonna gamble, you might as well gamble big.

And that's certainly paid off big for the UFC.

What's so great about spending 100 million to make 10 million?
