I've always found it interesting that no one really kicks like Cro Cop. Unlike most Thai fighters who look very similar in technique aside from small differences, he has a very distinct style when compared to anyone in K-1, MT, Kyokushin, etc.
What do you guys think it is about his technique that allows him to generate so much power?
Also, most of time Cro Cop threw his kicks with the supporting leg completely flat footed... do you agree with Bas (he says this in his instructional videos) that you generate much more power this way as opposed to pivoting on the ball of your foot?
i think part of his success rate in Ko'ing guys was timing and placement, for example, catching guys(often with much less skillful stand-up) moving into the kick.
I will have to look into standing flat footed for the kick and if it adds power
I've tried that before, standing flat footed, and my kicks were a LOT more powerful coming up onto my toes, regardless of kicking height. This went for linear kicks (push, side), and angular kicks (round, etc). Dunno if it was just because Id always trained to come up and rotate on the ball of my foot or not.
YMMV.
I always rotate on the balls of my feet except for low kicks, I open my foot at a 45 degree angle and leave it flat. I find that if I don't pivot with the higher kicks it tends to put too much stress of my knee after repeated kicking.
I personally agree that standing flat footed gives more power. I think most Thais rotate on the balls of their feet because the kicks are faster and easier to double up on this way which obviously works better for smaller fighters as compared to the larger Dutch kickboxers who focus more on power.
Another thing Cro Cop does when he kicks (body kicks specifically) - he kind of whips his opposite side arm in a circular motion down by his waist rather than keeping it up by his head to protect from a counter (it looks like he slightly leans back to make up for that though). This definitely adds more power to your kick due to the torque it produces but is something you obviously have to be careful with.
I like to step out on my toe rather than pivot. Thais are almost always on their toes I feel it makes footwork more efficient. If your standing flatfooted and u need to move or circle 1st thing u do is get up on your toes so cut that step out.
Kicking flat footed can really slow things down. People like Cro Cop are exceptions not the rule.
