The guy has had 3 business partners and friends go down for child exploitation… he must feel bullet proof
His former manager Phyllis Lee called him “Dumbo”.
Someone call?
0-2 vs Severn and Horn.
There were a lot of guys out there at the time who rolled through the local scene. “He’s in law enforcement”, etc.
I’m sure it could easily have been a work with the transitions and losing the mount, etc.
At the same time, only a few fighters knew what they were doing and local guys who literally trained in backyards or basements would always spaz out and get rear naked choked haha.
I knew several guys who were training at home aside from driving like 2+ hours to the nearest martial arts gym where a few guys were breaking into “NHB”. They would get their first fight in promotions like the DangerZone and the fights looked a lot like this one.
Quick example: Ben Rothwell was fighting in a DangerZone and was like 3-0 or something. I’m pretty sure I saw Ben put an 0-0 dude in a guillotine and literally walked around the ring lifting him up until he tapped. It was like Thunderlips vs Rocky.
Great times though! Severn fought a guy who was 0-0 in the main event and won by neck crank.
severn has had some very fishy fights
Uwfi had a big American name Gary Albright? Gary was suplex specialist…he would get guys in a full Nelson and suplex them head first into the mat…l watched waiting for him to kill somebody lol. When l first got the internet in 1999 my first search was Gary Albright…was pretty bummed out to find he had died of a heart attack a few years before.
Go on… Severn vs Royce?!
At some point I had assumed all of Dan’s post-ufc “fights” were not legit. Same with post Pride Bob Sapp.
besides Shannon Rich he probly has most works and they had a work against each other
Didn’t Severn start MMA when he was up in age? Maybe he decided that taking hits to the head isn’t worth the cash at the time and just put on fixed events to entertain instead of chance of letting the fans down. Either way, shouldn’t count as a win or loss… just throw the fixes out.
37 in his first ufc
Except Dan has legit skills and credentials. He came really close to making an Olympic team where the guy he narrowly lost to in the finals of the Olympic trials won gold. He was part of the original crew of Sunkist Kids wrestlers, and was a multi time D1 All American. He even had a win against Bruce Baumgartner in college. Comparing him to Shannon is like comparing dog shit to ice cream.
I was comparing his propensity for fixing fights to Shannon the Cannon, which I stand by.
There were way more guys working the smaller shows than just Shannon and Dan. Sometimes the promoters weren’t in on it. Sometimes they were.
When I get bored sometime I may share some stories. Why I’m here anyone remember the first UFC fighter the UFC had to cover up a sexual assault claim?
Good post. I had forgotten all about this.
Quick summary;
During the 1984 Olympic trials, he lost the final qualifying match in controversial fashion to eventual gold medal winner Lou Banach , a match that Severn credits with launching his career. "I would have retired in 1984 from competition had everything gone the way it should have gone…
Lou and his twin brother both won gold in 1984 - I always thought the Schultz’s were the only gold medal winning brother in the same Olympics. Lou wrestled for Gable and West Point.
Good read:
Quick summary for the controversial loss to Lou, according to Dan. Also, a great read for the old timers and young bucks that want to learn about early/ pre UFC options for wrestlers.
I buy that. But there’s a big disparity between them from a legitimate skill standpoint.
Yes bro, Shannon is a real can, Severn is a paid can. I’m fully aware of Severn’s wrestling creds, I was a big fan.
