Armbar Defense

Okay, so i trained my ass off for this last tourney and i got armbarred in a nice 2min 15sec...

He got the takedown a nice double i have to say, right into side control to mount, and then after a minute or so i trapped his arm and reversed him with an upa, when i did, in a split second he caught my arm and brought his leg over and started to extend, i bought a few seconds and tried to stack and clasped my hands together, i brought the same leg as the arm up also, but he rotated away and then i tried to yank my arm straight out which i can usually do to people who i am stronger than, but he put his whole body on my arm and i had to tap.

Any help here would be appreciated. how else could i have got my arm out? technical advice?

Posture.

Cut off your arms.

I'm a small guy - something that works for me is to KILL a leg (at least one leg).

Option 1. As his leg comes over your face, use your free arm to grab the back of his knee and push it down/away.

Option 2. If you can feel him slipping it on, you can also grab the bottom leg and pin it to the ground.

Without BOTH legs, he can't do the arm lock. So, by KILLING one leg, you can control his attack.

lol @ jonpall

Sounds like you left your arm hanging when you reversed him. You should have been drawing your elbows in tight half way through the reversal so when he landed on his back you were 'gone'...ya know! You only need to trap the arm till his shoulder hits the ground then you should already be transitioning to posture with elbows in. Once caught in a good armbar, unless there's a huge size difference or you have retard strength, you're gonna tap I am afraid.

Try to keep your elbows tight against your ribs a lot if you're in back mount, mount, side control or in someone's guard.

If your opponent starts to pull on your arm so that your elbow starts to seperate from your rib cage, it often helps to simply use your OTHER arm to help pull it back. I'm just talking about a very general concept of armbar defence.

Right after the upa, in your case, you should have pulled your elbows back to block his hips from pivoting.

I had a private a little while back covering this kind of stuff. one of the things was once you get him stacked, if you can get your leg (that is on the same side as the arm being attacked) up so your knee is on his tailbone. if you're grabbing behind his head and your knee is blocking his hips, its tough for him to extend.

how did he get your arm?,you should have both your hands controlling 1 of his arms tight to your chest

thanks guys, but i still haven't heard a way to defend that attack from the armbar that is new or makes sense to me. i know there is a purple, brown or black that has some insight that i can't figure out yet.....help please?

Luna, there are very good answers posted, POSTURE IS the answer.
Break it down, your opponent got your arm isolated, how did he do it?
Proper arm placement doing a bridge and roll is critical because when it's not there it's arm bar or choke.
Don't look for a magical answer, there answer is proper posture and proper execution of the upa.

There arm arm bar defenses when the arm bar is taking place, but it depends on the time factor and where he is in the arm bar attempt.
Break down the steps to do a correct arm bar, and figure out a counter for each step.

Sounds like you were real unlucky with the fight! Hopefully you'll do better next time.

I ain't no purple but I think there has been some good advice so far on the thread.

I would add that when I get caught in an armbar if i think about stacking the guy too much I usually get tapped eventually (because I forget the point is to GET THE ARM OUT and not to crush him)

Also pulling the arm straight out can be difficult: instead try jerking it out in stages

Hope thats some help

thaks everyone, i appreciate the advice. This will definitly help my game
