Bars lose big money on UFC

the businesses wouldn't continue to order them if they weren't making
money. its as simple as that. i don't doubt that some of them lose
money, but thats always going to be the case.

I'm a moron. A good club charges 20 bucks just to walk in for some DJ. I offered a free beer and appetizer with my cover, what is wrong with that. Fine ten bucks a cover and pay for your 4 dollar beer, and ten dollar appetizer.

LOL @ listening to a bartender speculating about the bar's financial situation.

Businesses get charged more for the PPV because its a draw to the establishment.

They charge Casinos in upwards on 25k to show a UFC.

$400 is way off. i worked at a very busy sportsbar/ nightclub and it wasnt worth us ordering PPV events and we'd typically do15k-20k/ night in sales on the weekends.

"so your market research consists of talking to ONE restaurant owner and then proclaiming "bars lose big money on UFC"? you are an idiot."

LOL. I agree completely, Chuckis#1 is an idiot.

Wow, the UG newbs are really insult-happy today!

I was discussing this with the bar manager/owner, so I assume she's correct in her figures.

Chuckis,
Good observation. Interesting thread. Bad title.

What I heard, and I think I heard it on this forum so take it with a grain of salt, but I heard that businesses are charged for the UFC based upon their capacity. I'm sure some of you saw the thread last week with the link to all the bars showing the UFC? Those are all the bars that have their cable hooked up under the business name and contacted UFC to order it the correct legal way, all those are probably going to be charging cover. Other bars, typically smaller ones, have cableboxes in the owner's name or whatever and just pay the $40. Of course I'd assume they could get in trouble, fined or whatever, for doing it that way, but when you run Joe Schmoe's Hole in the Wall Bar and Grill, Dana's probably not stopping by to ask how you got the PPV.

I suppose some people wouldn't be so upset if I had rephrased the title "bar loses big money...." instead.

"Those are all the bars that have their cable hooked up under the business name and contacted UFC to order it the correct legal way, all those are probably going to be charging cover. Other bars, typically smaller ones, have cableboxes in the owner's name or whatever and just pay the $40."

This isn't necessarily true. There was no cover at my bar, and they paid $400 for the PPV.

cletus is correct...
bars/businesses pay according to their maximum capacity. This sucks for bar owners because many times, their maximum capacity is never acheived so essentially they have to pay for people who dont even come thru the door.

i am sure that a lot of bar owners like to say that they have to pay a ridiculous amount to make people feel bad for them or to make the patron feel like the barowner is really trying to be customer friendly, however, the bottom line is that if you are able to order the UFC legally, (according to the proper way to order it if you own a business)...then you are making some cash...the others are probably doing what was mentioned above and have their cable boxes in their own name and because of that, they make a killing. It is also highly illegal and if you are caught...you face a pretty serious penalty.
anyway, everyone saying that the bar they went to paid 400 dollars is crazy, it is definetly much more than this, unless your capacity is like 30...and it ridiculous that everyone comes up with the number of 400 dollars...it is not a flat fee charged by the cable company...this would be ridiculous. 400 dollars for a place that holds 50 people...and 400 dollars for a place that holds 300...doesnt sound logical...hence the reason that bars are charged per maximum capacity.

Im sorry but thats just BS! What restaurant has people there past 10pm? Hardly any! The UFC packs there restaurant full of customers..yes the turnover is slow, but if it weren't for the event there wouldn't even be anyone there to turn the tables over to!

Bars that do not have the UFC PPVs in SoCal probably do worse than comparable bars that do have it...I go with a bunch of friends and we all drink during the whole event. I know I am not the only one because the places are more packed than normal.

I hope the other bars in the franchise made good money so that corporate forces them to order more events in the future, regardless of how much money they lose.

I imagine what the bartender was talking about was his tip money. He was probably anticipating that with people hanging out for 3 hours instead of turning over every 1.5 he would have less tips at the end of the night.

The restaurant made money I am certain. Any time your place is packed and people are drinking there is money being made. Even with paying the 400 bucks I would be amazed if they still were not up on the night. Why do you think bars in college town have nickle beer night? To pack the place and in return they give up 400 bucks in drinks. If the place was packed, the bar made money trust me.

People, tip your bartenders.

Bartenders, don't talk shitty about your customers in front of other customers. It is low class.

Let's see here...

I shot an e-mail out to my ninjas who were at the fights with me at Buffalo Wild Wings in Plano, Tx for their bar tabs. The results (some are rounded, some exact):

Lancifer & Ninja-hand Anne = 117.00

Cujo = 60

Darkness + Brianna = 70

Shannon B. = 40

Shannon S. = 80

Jackie = 30

Zaj = 87.63

Manny = 60

Poundcake = 160 (he can drink)

Keeno = 35

Bobby two-times & Kim = 46.25

Koop = 50

Wendy = 30

Mike = 67.00

TOTAL = 932.88

...and that is only those who responded...half the people in my group.

I'd say the thread title = incorrect.

lol @ losing money.

with anywhere from a 25% to 75% margin on drinks they sure as hell ain't losing money. If they lost its due to the general managment of staff and scheduling, not due to the fight.

There are restraunts that if something screws up they will comp the whole meal, through a normal friday night with all the business, there are easily $400 accumulated comps. I doubt they lost money that night.

The manager you spoke with is a moron. There was a crown and he may have actually been forced to do what most people do everyday which is called WORK...he got used to sitting his ass at the bar and "managing".
