I am curious what DVD you all think has the best Guard combination attacks, including overall strategy, set-ups, and combinations.
For example, Lap Guard Sweep to Kimura (if he posts) to Guillotine (if he hugs to block Kimura). This is an extremely effective combination if you are fast enough to pull it off.
The people at Island Video might be good but their customer service kind of sucks. I asked questions about the Randy Bloom Transitions video and the Rodrigo Mediero "sequence of attack" tapes, and the only answer I got was "I don't know I'm not a BJJ player sorry". What the hell is that?! There's nothing like not knowing your own product line.
I heard Michael Jen is really good for this. Basically, I am a 2-stripe white belt (promoted by Brazilian bb) and I want to qualify for my blue belt.
I think finishing people from my Guard more quickly will help. That means more "chain of attack" stuff. I'm just curious if anybody knows how the Mediero tapes compare to Michael Jen. I heard Island makes good DVD's but that isn't very specific.
I use Jen as my foundation. In Ultimate Guard 1 he shows basic techniques, then how to do double and triple combos. In Ultimate Guard 2 he shows all the basic grips like whizzer/overhook, situp/cross-overhook, underhook, high-guard, etc. what triggers each one, several sweeps and subs from each, and most importantly how to flow between sweeps and subs, and the other grips, depending on resistance so you're continually pressuring.
Modeiros has excellent stuff, well laid out, but not the same overal methodology and system so I plan on adding some of it in later.
Kukak A-Z has four dvds that cover the guard. Tons of fundamentals, set ups, sweeps and submissions.
Matt Thornton's Guard tape teaches principles, sweeps and submissions. A must have.
He really focuses on how to behave in the guard...i.e a climbing guard, keep your hips free, etc.
Mario Sperry's guard tapes from his Vale Tudo 2 chains moves together. His SOSW does the same...deals with butterfly guard and when your opponent stands.
Rodrigo's videos are excellent, however, as a white belt, they really aren't designed for your particular level. I would recommend Rodrigo's videos after you already have a good foundation on the basics.
At your level and for what you are looking for, you would be best off with my Ulimate Guard 1.
No it does not cover breaking base and keeping someone if the closed guard as far as just holding them there. It only covers 13 basic techniques and then I teach how to put those techniques in combinations of 2 - 5 techniques. This video is designed for absolute beginners.
