Tore my acl/mcl/meniscus about ten years ago had surgery, a few years later tore meniscus again had another surgery. Since then my knee has felt loose and if I move the wrong way I get sharp pain and maybe a little swelling. Been to the doctor a few times to get it look at everything is intact.
So I ask the great minds of the UG what knee brace do I need for wrestling/grappling that will help me stabilize knee better and stay injury free?
Having multiple ACL replacements and tore ACLs the best braces are
ones that 1) do not have any metal hinges (lateral), they cause damage to partner and don’t allow easy movement . 2) Need criss-cross straps since it is not the outside ligaments, it is twisting of knee that gets damaged. 3) buy one a little smaller than needed for better hold. 4) don’t cheap out, buy a good one. Only wear it while grappling, it will ‘strangle’ your knee and you need all the circulation you can get.
Also - work on strengthening your hamstrings, do one legged no weight squats, start with short movements, then as it gets stronger, go lower. This get the stabilizers working better. I don’t have a brand name, sorry.
oh BTW I am not a noob, My account got locked and it was easier to get a new one
As an ACL deficient blue belt, I’ll say there is no effective brace for ACL injuries. You need hinges strong enough to stabilize your knee and those aren’t legal because they injure your partner. Baurfield and all those are great sleeves, but they aren’t braces.
Relevant to my interests. ACL reconstruction in 2013. Always tweak it training. Hard for me to accept limitations and I always go a little too far. Would love to feel a little more stable for grappling and also surfing.
I had a thread about this a while ago

Cool story, bro. What did y’all come up with?
2 acl reconstructions here . I’d say bauerfeind . They have a few models for knees depending on injury. Fits snug , breathable and we’ll not “hinged “ and does have a thing flexible plastic , along the side like a hinged brace . For me it gives me a bit of peace of mind and has no effect on my trainer partner
Tore my acl and miniscus, never fixed either, both completely torn from what im told. I use one of those that have three straps , two going around in the same direction, and the other coming from the different direction.
I feel fine wearing it when i run but its stupid shit that i do thatll tweak it and hurt it some more, usually work stuff or playing with the kids kind of shit.
great thread,
what about for boxing or kickboxing
had an acl surgery before
the balance is almost perfect if i have to move back quick
or if grappling is involved if grab a single on good leg, then the repaired fails, i have to go with the takedown or knee buckles
any advice on type of brace,
