Best way to train your chin?

Haha he be trollin Phone Post

Musashi - I know a doctor who will alter nerve pathways in the jaw and chin to prevent flash KO's. Only a small percentage of patients experience mild permanent numbness.

You cant train "chin" but i believe you can train how to keep your composure aften being hit really hard or dropped. Compare Kampmann with Ellenberger. Phone Post

frederic - 1. Learn to tuck chin and not leave it out.
2. Clench jaw. A lose jaw will be more prone to KOs.
3. Neck strengthening. Don't overdo it and strain your neck, but there are shrugs, head-weight-rig exercises (see Thai/boxing catalogs), etc.
4. See the punch coming or don't get hit at all by blocking better and/or bobbing, weaving, dodging.

Worst thing to do is condition your chin by getting KO'd. Seems that getting KO'd only makes you more susceptible.
Cool. So it seems like I'd have a much higher chance of getting KO'd with the hard shots version, so I'll do those four things plus the repeated weaker shots. My friends coming over tomorrow and he's gonna put on some of the heavy 16 oz gloves and jab me in the chin for about twenty minutes. Thanks man! Do you think three times of that a week would be enough? I'll make sure I clench my jaw.

Wow are You a troll? Phone Post

Let your friend blast you with hard punches. That gets your brain used to the feeling of getting hit. Then it will start adjusting and building some extra brain tissue around itself to keep it protected in the future. It takes about 30-45 minutes tho for the process to get started. So your going to have to get two friends to take turns probably because they usually get tired around 10 minutes of repeated punching.

This is the time tested way of conditioning your chin. I know its been used by great boxers and MMA fighters alike for years. I've been doing it myself for the past couple of years and now my friends can kick me in the head and I'm totally fine. Good luck with your training mate.

It seems to me the best way to improve your chin is technical.

To keep your eyes on your opponent, and have proper movement, so that you can anticipate strikes, and move accordingly, to prevent him from hitting you as well, as hard, and as perfectly angled as he would like.

Don't listen to all the idiot trolls on this thread, you could hurt yourself.

The best thing to do, is to take the biggest possible punches you can during training. When you get knocked out, because after a few you will, make sure you stand right back up and keep taking them. This will make you build a tolerance.

It is best to do this every day or every other day.

Steven Seagull had a seminar years ago and talked about this, its a special Bullshito technique he learned from his stunt acting schooling.

This^^

I was disgusted at the advice given previously in this thread. I mean "try not to tak eshots" really, thats like telling a guy to learn to squat by never squatting.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Dont clench your jaw you dont want to tense up you want to stay loose and relaxed and roll with the punches Phone Post

frederic - This is up there with the conditioning the shins myth. The way to condition the shins is to feather the kicks where they'll be blocked/checked especially shin-on-shin, and go to town on the softer targets.

I've never heard of Thai fighters kicking palm trees.
Now you have....
I have seen that video and it is a demonstration of power. Not of "toughening the legs."

Sliced - A couple of friends have suggested just a few hard shots to the chin so I get used to it and a couple of others think I should take softer repeated punches like jabs so I can build up a tolerance. Do most of you guys train with the hard shots way or the softer way?
You don't get better at something by not doing it, right?

Hard shots to the face by day. Joe Rogan podcast by night. All day.

Pride Rules -  anderson lets people beat on his face on a regular basis

there was a vid of him sparring with big nog and hes just letting nog hit him over and over

another vid he is on his back and some dude is dropping medium GnP on his chin and hes just taking it
Haven't seen the big nog one but the gnp one he is clearly rolling with the punches Phone Post

Well now I'm getting a bunch of conflicting advice which is frustrating.

I'm just gonna do the method my trainer said. Idk if anybody here knows who he is but his name is Scott Blevins. He's a pro with a bunch of fights from what I hear so I have to assume he knows what he's talking about. Phone Post

Dude, 90% of these guys are fucking with you because they are assholes and find it amusing to give a young martial artist bad advice.

Straight up, you do need to get used to taking a shot. One of the reasons guys go out so fast is because they have ZERO tolerance built up to head trauma, and the shock of the impact is just something their nervous system has never experienced before.

On the other hand, another reason guys go out so fast is because they have taken too many shots, just like Chuck. So obviously it is important to find a balance between acclimating your nervous system without deteriorating it.

Now, with all that being said, there is not a whole lot you can do to improve your innate, physical ability to take a punch without sleeping. All the neck exercises and mild shots to the chin won't mean shit if you get caught.

So ultimately I feel that awareness is by far the most important aspect of having a good Chin. Someone pointed out earlier the thread about Anderson developing his Chin, and he has that shit nailed. He allows himself to take some pretty big shots, but he ALWAYS sees it coming, and rolls his face with the shot, robbing the punch of most of it's power.

He is so confident in his ability that half the time he doesn't even BLOCK punches from guys like Okami, Forrest, and Rich. He just let's his reflexes and face do all the work, it's one of the most impressive things that has EVER been seen in the fight game going back as long as you care to look.

If you can't find the thread just google "Anderson's Chin" and try to find the video.

Although if you think that type of reflex game isn't for you, having perfect defensive form can help a lot.

Chin Tucked
Shoulders Hunched
Hands up

Personally I need to keep my hands lower to move effectively, also because staying in the pocket is for sterner men than me. I guess what I'm trying to say is stay outside, don't ever just cover up to wait for a counter opportunity, if your head is in range it can get hit, and it will, a fuck of a lot. People can talk shit all they want about Point Karate, but Lyoto is the least hit Man in the UFC for that exact reason.

So, don't get hit. If your head is in the pocket you can't see some of what's coming. You will get KO'd.

Staying out of the pocket allows you to see everything. If you can see it coming you can react and lessen the blow every time.

If you do get hit moving with the blow is far more important than any "Chin Training" you could do, spending time on situational awareness is a much better idea. Anderson could give 90% of the UFC 10 free shots and all he can do is move his head and he would still be standing by the end of it.
