It was a very good plan by Sherk. The boxing was a distraction to land leg kicks, further weakening BJs TD defense in rounds 4 and 5. Sherk got unlucky by breaking his hand and getting caught with that knee just before he could really lay it on.

I think the gameplan was as good as he could have hoped for. I definitely thought he broke his hand. The plan was to wear Bj's legs down to make the takedowns easier...

It sucked. He gave Penn three rounds while not tiring him much at all, since all Penn had to do was step back and throw non-tiring jabs all night. He didn't make him work to fight off takedowns and gave himself little chance of winning the fight. Sherk's reach disadvantage is just too much to make standing with anyone a good strategy for him -- which is too bad, because he's fast as shit and has a great chin.

I think trying for the takedown would have been pointless in the early rounds. BJ's balance is excellent, and he would have been throwing strikes while hopping on the single leg....

Tell that to Matt Hughes. Fighting off takedowns in the first round gassed the hell out of BJ in their fight and it showed when he was taken down instantly in the second.


Trying for takedowns, even unsuccessful ones, would tire BJ out as well as provide some time during which he wasn't being jabbed and out-pointed.
