BJJ and hip replacements, anyone gone thru it?

40 yrs old, been rolling for almost a year. I've needed new hips for a long time due to hip dysplasia and chronic arthritis and have finally decided to go through with it. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with returning to the mats and how long before they were able to roll again. Any tips/comments are welcomed as I refuse to quit bjj as it has turned into my lifeline for sanity. Thanks in advance!

No, but good luck!

A good friend of mine had hip resurfacing which is a pretty similar procedure. He was back on the mat training in 3 months and full force by 4 months Phone Post

Good to know, thanks!

Danny Dring a 4th degree BJJ blackbelt (Nova Uniao) had a hip replacement. He has a book out about recovering from injuries: http://www.amazon.com/Stay-Fight-Athletes-Preventing-Overcoming/dp/089750187X

Thank you very much! I just ordered it, looks like exactly what I need! Appreciate it!

Had metal on metal resurfacing done when I was 40 (10 years ago) and went back to full speed training in 11 weeks. It was the best decision I ever made.

Where are you having it done, mine was done at Hopkins in Baltimore

Don't have an exact date, but late nov/early dec most likely @northwestern in Chicago.

A good friend of mine had one also. I am not sure how long till he was full strength but it wasn't any where as long as I thought it would be. He began training tying his legs together so he wouldn't hurt his hip

Nope but wish u the best of luck! Phone Post
