is it a given to have knee or back injuries if you train bjj for many years? I didn't think it was that common, but lately have been hearing a lot of stories...have all blackbelts been through major injuries/surgeries?

It goes hand in hand with earning a black belt in BJJ. It is like those kung fu or karate dudes that have callouses on the knuckles from punching concrete pilars or those wang chung dummies or sticking their hands in bags of sand or red beans. Back injuies or calloused knuckles all build character & provide one with something to look back on.
