Even before the fight was cancelled just over two weeks before it was set to get underway, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic was a divisive match-up.
Whilst the fight was a big deal for both men from a legacy stand point, a lot of fans would have rather seen Jones defend the title against an up and coming contender rather than the former champ who has been inactive for two and a half years.

Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich are set to meet for the interim title which though gives the fans the fight they want to see, it still leaves the division in an odd place.
Despite the winner being the interim champion, they will have to wait for Jones to come back and fight Stipe before they can fight for the full heavyweight title.
Or, as many assume to be the case, wait to be promoted to the world champion once âBonesâ and Miocic call time on their careers.

Brendan Schaub Says The âUFC Missed The Boatâ In Not Stripping Jon Jones Ahead Of UFC 295
A lot of the talk going into Madison Square Garden on November 11 was that both Jones and Miocic would ride off into the sunset regardless of the outcome.
With that in mind, Brendan Schaub believes that Jones should have been forced to vacate the belt following his injury.
Not only does his time off hold up the division, itâs also a situation where as Schaub states, the belt would have likely been vacant come November 12 anyway.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Schaub said that the UFC should have done what they did in the light heavyweight division in creating a vacant title so that the division can continue in Jonesâ absence.
âUFC missed the boat on this a little not stripping, I guess yeah, strip him of the belt. When he beat Ciryl Gane heâs the heavyweight champ, when your champ is out at least a year with this injury, there should not be an interim title fight, it should just be the vacant belt.â
When you think about Jon Jones and Stipe, I guess the rumour, anybody whoâs close to the game knows that the plan was for both these guys to retire so whether it was win or loss on either end, Stipe was planning on retiring, Jon Jones was going to do the same thing so either way, if their fight were to go down like it was supposed to in two weeks, you still donât really have a heavyweight champion.
White clears up Jones/Miocic/Aspinall/Pavlovich situation
âOne hundred percent (the winner will have to wait for Jones vs. Miocic to happen),â White said. âSo hereâs the deal: Jones and Stipe were supposed to fight. Jones gets hurt, right? Eight, nine months heâs going to be out. You donât strip him or take him out of the rankings after a year, right?
âSo, if youâre Sergei and Aspinall, youâre getting the opportunity to fight for the interim title anyway now. So, yeah, theyâre going to have to wait until this fight happens. This fight was set up; this fight needs to happen. Two of the biggest legends in the sport want the fight, (and) the fans want the fight.â
âTo be the man, youâve got to beat the man. So whoever wins that fight, it would be nice to see them stick around and defend it,â White said. âThat we canât determine until it happens.â
Do the fans really want the fight at this point?
Did they strip Jiri?
Shaub is an annoying tool, but the UFC did vacate the LHW title when whatever his name was injured and needed surgery. They just desperately want to have Jon and Stipe fight in a title fight. Even if they are both in their 40s when it happens.
Pretty sure he willingly gave it up so he didnt hold up the division
I would literally LOL if they stripped Jones of the belt FOR A THIRD TIME, surpassing Conor McGregor.
When Jamahal Hill got injured and required surgery, the promotion stripped him of the 205-pound title for the vacant strap at UFC 295.
Dana talked Jiri into vacating the title, with the promise heâd get an immediate title shot upon his return.
Schlub is correct.
Itâs incorrect. Hill gave it up on his own. Iâm pretty sure Jiri did the same. Jiri shouldâve just kept the belt considering how things turned out. They didnât keep the division moving in his absence anyway. They crowned Hill the new champ a few weeks after Jiriâs injury and then proceeded to wait for Jiri.
They definitely should strip Jones though. If he still wants to come back and fight Stipe, have at it but not for the title. If he wants to come back for the title, it should be against a current top HW.
It took a year and a half to strip McGregor
Officially not, he gave up the belt, but he is still young, Jones was at the end and this was his farewell fight.
Jones must have dirt on Dana cause he canât done anything wrong, so he gets his farewell fight, even if it would takes years to complete.
