Canada is the new MMA Meca

It could be said that at one time Japan was the sun around which the MMA worlds orbited. Pride, K-1, Pancrase, Shooto and DEEP could be counted on to deliver more quality events than any one fan could reasonably consume.

These days with big international MMA shows on hiatus in the land of the rising sun, a new country has become the wild, western frontier for mixed martial arts.

With the recent sanctioning in Canada's largest province of Ontario, a burgeoning scene has exploded in the country, considered the UFC's #1 market per capita for the UFC. These days many fighters are looking north for opportunities for quality fights with big purses and television exposure.

For a country of only 30 million people the MMA scene in Canada is unrivaled and for those of us who follow the sport closely in Canada it is easy to see that there is plenty of room to grow. Many areas in Canada don't have any quality MMA promotions and Ontario is in its infancy.

Canadian sports television network The Score is doubling it's efforts in the MMA television, promotion and internet streaming markets and the rebranded Fight Network is getting serious about airing live fight cards from around the world.

Here's a quick rundown of high quality, Canadian MMA shows in the near future:

05/19 - Jones Entertainment Group Presents: MMA Live 1 in London Ontario

06/05 - Ringside 11 in Quebec City, Quebec

06/10 - MFC 30: Up Close & Personal in Edmonton, Alberta
