Gina Carano and Cris “Cyborg” Santos will fight five rounds for Strikeforce championship
Coming off the announcement of a bout between Gina Carano and Cris “Cyborg” Santos finally coming to fruition, Strikeforce has now confirmed the clash will be for the promotion’s first-ever Female Championship. The fight will take place at 145-pounds. Additionally, Five Ounces of Pain has learned the match-up is scheduled for five rounds due to the belt’s involvement.
Said an animated Carano in reference to her upcoming scrap with one of the most physically intimidating, aggressive fighters in women’s’ MMA, “I’m really excited to be coming back and to have a new home with Strikeforce. I’ve wanted this fight with ‘Cyborg’ for a long time and so have the fans so it was important to me that it happen in my first fight back. I’ve been training hard the last few months and come August 15th, I will be in the best shape of my life. This fight will absolutely deliver on all the hype.”
August 15th, 2009 will mark Carano’s second appearance under the Strikeforce banner. In 2006, and her third professional fight, she walked away the winner in a unanimous decision victory over Cung Le protégé Elaina Maxwell.
Glad to see it is going to be a five rounder, but I would still like to see the women's divisions get 5min rounds instead of the 3min.
hankhill - If they want equal pay as men then fight equal time......
That isn't their choice, it's the choice of the commission.

Is this true? The licensing commission, not the promotion, determines the length of the fight? I did not know that...

This is NOT true. Its up to the promotion, if the promotion requests the women fight 5-minute rounds then the CSAC will sanction it. Here is part of a letter from Gil DeLuna, Acting Assistant Executive Officer of CSAC, and he wrote:
>>>Thank you for your correspondence. I contacted our legal counsel on this. Rule 512(b) applies to both men's and women's mixed martial arts and allows 5 rounds with each round not to exceed 5 minutes. If the promoters want to have 5 minute rounds the Commission rules authorize same. The only place the MMA rules distinguish between men and women is in Rule 510 - Weights and Classes. The Commission can't force promoters, however, to put on rounds of a certain length as the rule reads that rounds are "not to exceed" 5 minutes. It's in the promoter's discretion. <<<
The fighters want 5-minute rounds, the fans want 5-minute rounds and the CSAC allows for women to fight 5-minute rounds.....its Scott Coker and Strikeforce that insist on 3-minute rounds. Perhaps, if enough of us would take a moment and send them a message and let them know that we, THE FANS, want 5-minute rounds, they may change it.

While you're at it let them know we want elbows to the head allowed on the ground.
just get rid of the weight classes for women. They aint gonna try making weight anyway.
The only reason to watch them fight is for carino's bouncy boobies. Hell maybe one will flop out.
The fight will take place at 145-pounds.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Assuming they make weight, this is a good thing. Too often the women's bouts end via decision just because they're way too short. This at least gives them another 6:00 to get it done. Still, those 3:00 rounds make the ground game almost pointless. Unless you take someone down into mount at the opening bell, it's tough to set someone up for a submission or even land a ton of strikes against a good opponent in a 3:00 round.
If Cyborg fucks Gina's face up is womens MMA going to be called off?
1 round 25 min. much better
Actually, it was when trying to make 135 and 140 that Carano missed weight and Cyborg made 140 when she fought Shayna, so really there is no reason for either not to make 145.
