Could having the exposure of such a popular "sports" personality come into the top mma league and fail not be such a bad thing? Having him win will generate long term interest but if he fails then it could amplify the perceived skill and lessen the uncivilised/barbaric perception?

People have to realize he wants to fight and if not UFC where is he bringing the viewers... Bellator? You cannot deny the power Brock had when he came in it was awesome for the sport.
They didn't have a choice IMO.
People need to pull on their big girl panties and realise that the UFC is a business and they'll do whatever they need to do to maintain or increase market share. This means bringing in people who will boost ratings. Whether that's a WWE guy with zero experience or trying to give a title shot to a woman who retired 5 years ago after a loss.
If this CM Punk guy wants to try mma there's no way the UFC could let Bellator get him. They're not stupid. Just look at the number of threads there's been since the announcement and it explains perfectly why they had to sign him.

It's UFC not UNICEF and it's about entertainment it's not some Olympics MMA.
But too much blurring of the lines can't get those casuals to watch.
It isn't 2008. Even if you draw the WWE universe over to watch Punk's debut, how many will PAY?
Vince can't even get these neck beards to pay 10 bucks a month for EVERYTHING and you think they'll pay 60 bucks to see ONE CM Punk fight?
Wrestling nerds will first row, torrent, etc the one event Punk is on.
It'll move the needle of INTEREST.
Monetizing that? Different story and it's why you need to put it on FOX.
