Exactly.  There's a video of Colby and maybe Helwani where Colby outlines this exact point.  Dana is there to promote the UFC, not you, so you have to take your own destiny into your hands. No disrespect to the following names, but guys like Douglas Lima, Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, and Gegard Mousasi are some of the baddest dudes in the sport and not a single person walking down main street would probably be able to pick them out of a police lineup.

Now Covington, while he may not be at Beatles level mainstream popularity, has certainly gotten himself into much higher public consciousness than most MMA fighters (for better or worse) and has raised his profile.  Doesn't hurt that he's the real deal and is a bad mfer in the cage, either.

It was the same thing with Chael, who started his career as yet another boring, pasty, white bread wrestler from the Pacific Northwest, who finally realized you had to spice things up and create a character.  Since then, he talked himself into three world title fights, big money other fights, big money contracts, and has now parlayed that character into a successful podcast and analyst gigs on network television. 

Your ability to form a character and hone a brand can be absolutely life changing if done right. 

Even Conor.  How many other dudes are out there in MMA right now with a big left hand and an empty wallet?  It's just the name of the game.

This 100%. Colby found a way to market himself and make himself alot of money and fame doing it. Chael Sonnen did the same thing when he heel turned.
