It would be retarded for Condit to take another fight in the meantime...
Get real.

This is glaringly illogical. If he beats GSP he becomes the champion and the amount of money he gets will dwarf a small payday from fighting Kos. Kos is also a nasty fighter and could very well beat Condit which would put Carlos back at square one. That could result in him never getting a title shot at all and instead he'd be fighting for relative beans compared to a GSP fight payday.
He had absolutely nothing to gain by fighting Koscheck. The Natural Born Killer has a kid to feed.
I agree with everything you say, but I still stand by what I said, that it's primarily about what's at stake for Condit if he lost.

For a professional fighter, every fight (especially one that would even be the main event) is a win in a way. That's what pro fighter do, isn't it - fight?
No - most who obtain wealth through fighting make every effort to maintain and grow more of it. GSP is the perfect example of this given his "point" style of fighting. He's not eager to become a brawler because he has a LOT to lose.
Being a fighter is equivalent to running a business. They must do what they can to get as much money as possible from this game while they can and who can blame them?
From a career perspective it would not make any sense whatsoever for Carlos to jeopardize his title shot.
If GSP was going to have a long lay off then I would agree but the fight is only postponed for a couple of weeks or so.
How exactly is Jake Ellenberger more qualified then Condit when Ellenberger lost to Condit? He only beat Jake Shields a month ago after Condit had been scheduled to fight GSP.
Isn't it only going to be a short delay? If GSP was out for a while it would be one thing but they're looking at a short time frame.
Either a guy is the number one contender or he's not, and the OP's logic is kinda ridiculous if you don't mention that Diaz was basically a hype match in the first place.

Ellenberger/Condit was essentially a draw. Ellenberger beat the shit out of Condit in the first round and almost finished him, and then gassed and got outworked for the next 2 rounds.
Shields is far better than anyone Condit has beaten. That's the core of my rationale. Also if you're going back far enough to consider Ellenberger/Condit, wouldn't you also have to consider Kampmann/Condit?
Oh yea, and I almost forgot that Shields beat Condit back in ROTR, too.

I think Condit can wait as long as its only a couple of months like they're anticipating. Why screw everything up by bringing someone in on short notice when it really isn't necessary? GSP won't be out long and Diaz vs Penn is a perfectly good main event.
I see it like this, Condit was fighting BJ Penn for a title shot had he won. He was more than deserving with being the WEC champ and only losing a close fight to Kampman. I don't see any other fighter at WW ahead of him outside of Diaz. And I don't think Nick is going to come out of his fight with BJ without some cuts or worse. So putting GSP on the shelf for any amount of time longer than required for his knee would not only be a disservice to the fans but the rest of the WW div.
Jake is very close though but I think he needs a win off one of the top guys not coming off a loss. So what I would do is this.
BJ beats Nick he fights Jake, winner fights winner of GSP/Condit
Diaz wins he fights winner of Condit/GSP.
Jake can fight winner of Hendricks/Fitch for title shot in their next fight.
As I see it Condit or Diaz should have next shot at GSP, everyone else is one fight away, mostly because GSP has already fought most of them once and some twice outside of Condit and Diaz. Everyone else needs one more statement. If BJ wipes the floor with Diaz that would change a lot of things but still would be a tough sell considering he is 0-2 against GSP. But it would make things interesting.
I don't understand how anyone can say Carlos isn't a top contender or hasn't earned a title shot. He lost to Kampmann in a fight most people thought he won, he beat Ellenberger, stopped Rory, KO'd Hardy (who fought for the belt, no matter how undeserving that shot was) and kneed Stun Gun in the face. He deserves the shot more than Diaz does IMO.
Look at it this way; had the original fights stayed the same and Diaz was still fighting GSP & Penn was still fighting Condit. When GSP got hurt, Penn would have been moved to the main event spot aganist Diaz & Condit would have been given a new opponent. Most likley Kos.
But because he was promised a title shot now he doesn't have to fight another guy? wtf?
