He won via strikes in 67 seconds. And he won $60,000 Knockout of the Night performance bonus.

The week before, he had been on welfare.

"I'm just happy I won $60K," said McGregor. "I'm just thinking on what I'm going to spend it on. I'll buy myself a car any way. A nice car, maybe some suits or something. Custom made suits, I don't know.

"Just last week I was collecting the social welfare, you know what I mean? I was in there saying to them like, 'I don't know what going to happen. I'm signed to the UFC. I don't know what....blah, blah, blah.' But now I supposed I'm gonna have to tell them to f*** off!"

It's three years later, and he just made it onto Forbes' list of the top 100 highest paid athletes in the world.

'Notorious' broke itno the list at #85, with $22,000,000 in income over the past 12 months. Forbes estimates the breakdown at $18 million from fighting in the UFC and $4 million from endorsements.

UFC star Conor McGregor fought three times over the past 12 months, including headlining two of the three best-selling UFC fights ever on pay-per-view. UFC 194 where McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds had 1.2 million buys. McGregor lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 (their rematch will be at UFC 202 in August) which sold a massive 1.5 million units. His cut of PPV revenue pushed McGregor's earnings in the Octagon to $18 million. The Irishman also banked an estimated $4 million outside the Octagon through appearances and endorsement partners Reebok, Fanatics, Monster Energy, BSN, Bud Light, Rolls Royce and Electronic Arts.

The fighter took making the list in stride.

McGregor will make a lot more in his rematch vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 202 on August 20 event.

Former UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey made a separate list for world’s highest-paid female athletes, with $14,000,000, which placed her at #3, but that's another story.

If you are curious, here is the top 20:
1. Cristiano Ronaldo - $88 million
2. Lionel Messi - $81.4 million
3. LeBron James - $77.2 million

and then he threw it all away

He'll probably make over $10 mil for the Diaz rematch. Hardly throwing it away. Phone Post 3.0

He's doing well for himself. Hopefully he is putting some away for a rainy day Phone Post 3.0

Not to hate but, personally, the first thing I'd do is pay back the welfare I'd been given.

But then, I'd rather pitch a tent in the wilderness than take it in the first place.

Isn't paying back your welfare just called paying your due taxes?

I wonder how accurate those estimates really are.

$22 million in a year is impressive though for MMA.

^ This lol. He's paid way more into the system than he got out of it.

It's a shame, a disgrace, a freaking bloody embarrassment that this motormouth is the first fighter to be paid millions by the UFC. Not Jon Jones, not Robbie Lawler, not Chris Weidman. A shame.

Right but everyone pays taxes, regardless of whether or not they use welfare.

And, at the time, he hadn't had much of a tax-paying working life to speak of. He worked as an apprentice plumber with his father for a few months or something.

I'm just saying, nice suits wouldn't be among the first things on my mind, having won 60k. But then, I've never been poor enough to have to even think about welfare, luckily.

Joe Flacco #14? Get the fuck outta here.

One good year and his agent got his athlete paid. Damn that man is a goat level agent.

"I'm gonna breeze past the $10 million mark" @ 40 seconds.

Flacco is a solid player and if the Ravens didn't pay him another team would of. Established QB's are hard to come by especially one who has proven he can win in the playoffs. Phone Post 3.0

The Irish government ruined the economy by being greedy scumbags and forced a lot of people onto welfare. I'm not saying that's why Conor was on welfare but I think he's more than payed them back just by brining the UFC back to Ireland a couple of years ago. Phone Post 3.0

^This.

I worked my arse off in Ireland and paid taxes.

In Ireland if you are out of work you are expected to apply for social welfare payments.

The one time I found myself jobless through no fault of my own I was forced onto the dole, but because I was lucky enough to be able to live at home at that time they only gave me the equivalent of about $25 a week. That just made me more determined to go out and find work so I could get off the dole ASAP.

Sure there are people who milk it, but I can guarantee you McGregors put way more into the economy/governments coffers than he's gotten from it.

Gsp and Anderson got paid in the millions.
Jon Jones wrecked his own progress.
Lawler doesn't market his fights well.
And Weidman hasn't done much other than beaten a trt less Vitor (who hasn't).
He shouldn't have gotten the Anderson fight, because he wasn't built up enough previously.... Phone Post 3.0
