If he went in there and destroyed Silva, even though it was short notice, it would have helped him legitimize his title and put a little more divide between him and the term "paper champion".
If he would have lost tonight, he'd have a chance in 3 months to erase that loss and show the world the first fight was a fluke (keeping his championship contract in the meantime).
If he wins the rematch, he'd be in no different position than he's in right now. If he loses the rematch, then he truly loses everything.
