okay so im 6'3''. i have a lean build with proportions similar to the gracie bros. its been bugging me this week how much i struggle with tall people(i actually hate rolling with short guys too but thats a different discussion.) i dont know if it just sucks in general rolling with tall people or maybe im just not used to it cause i rarely find someone taller than me all these years. maybe im just getting a taste of my own medicine and this is in fact how other people feel rolling with me. i roll with a tall black belt who is maybe 6'6'' and a blue belt who is around the same. both frustrate me more cause of the size issue than ability level. the blue belt i can handle and everything but the effort it takes me to tap him and just "feel comfortable" pisses me off. just the proportions make everything feel weird to me. i feel like for me personally my opponent's height is more a factor than their weight. my conclusion has been to just roll with him and other tall guys more and ill get used to it. any other advice or moral support from other black or higher belts?
I feel the same way. I would like to hear some advice on dealing with taller people too. To me weight is not as much of a factor as height.
Smash pass/TT pass.
From bottom, you have to get under their base. Reverse DLR kiss of the dragon, x guard etc.
Guys who want to use their length, you have to compress into a ball. Shorter guys who want to stay in a tight ball, you have to extend and stretch out.
nogidavid - 6'4 and not telling you ;)
I am 6'4 as well, and I agree rolling with a guy who is taller, or shorter is tough. However, at least for me I like to think of it like what advantage do they have on me if they are taller than me? Of course that is longer legs/arms, and just able to play from different distances. One of my best friends is a black belt, but about 5'9. Now other than just being a lot better than me he really controls distance a lot more with me, and will really control my legs which makes it hard for me to do much. Just my .02 cents.

"compress into a ball" ill keep that in mind. thank you.
Yeah Tall guys can feel heavier than heavier shorter guys in some positions. Leverage spots just don't seem to work without some adjustments. A tall guy with good posture is a nightmare for me to deal with. Also tall guys can post mid sweep far enough away that you can't grab anything.
On the bright side there is usually a lot of room to move through and around the legs once you get to them.
I like to overhook an arm and get a cross collar grip. Pushing my feet on the hips helps to break posture until you unbalance them.

Wait you're 6'3 and don't know how to deal with "tall" guys?? Who are you training with, the NBA D League? I would think you should ordinarily be taller than most guys you train with, no?
Assuming you're being serious....as a relatively short guy, I work to beat grips and do whatever I can to get passed the knees. Like the saying goes, we're all the same height lying down. You just gotta beat the limbs.
Yes I'm serious. As I mentioned in my post. I am tall myself. When I roll with someone else that's taller its a rarity. So when it happens its extremely uncomfortable for me. I feel just fine rolling with other brown and black belts. However I have a blue belt teammate of all things that is taller than me. It brings me a lot of frustration. I can tap him, be in control and all good stuff that a higher rank should be doing however its a very frustrating process. I feel uncomfortable the whole time and rarely satisfied with my performance. My belief is that I should just make it a point to roll with him and other tall people more often.
I'm 6'8. I find side control relatively hard to escape, especially difficult to try to regain guard. But escaping mount is easier since my upa is so strong.
So control a tall guy via side control instead of mount. Just my 2 cents.
