Dear DFW....

if you can, or see if Keith Kiezer can do it, use some of your influence to ask referee's to please

SHUT THE FUCK UP during fights.

A referee talking to a fighter is influencing the outcome of a fight.
It is not his job to motivate a person to get out of a position.
It is not his job to motivate a person for more action.
It is not his job to warn people about fouls.

End the fight is a fighter is not defending properly.
Restart if there is no action.
Deduct a point if a foul is committed.

I'm tired of hearing these guys chat away. some are getting way out of hand. It's like they're looking for their own stardom.

he should warn about fouls otherwise fence grabbing would be worse than it is

everything else i agree with

nope, you just deduct a point. The fighter knows it's a foul. why warn?
No other sport does that, MMA shouldn't either.

Correct. Warn about fouls, NOTHING else.

Can you provide an example of a fight when this happened? Not disagreeing with you, it's just I usually watch at a bar and it's pretty noisy so I've never heard a ref do that.

I also agree with everything else except for the fouls. "let go of the fence" and "don't grab his shorts" are necessary prompts. I'd rather hear warnings then see points taken away for most fouls. Phone Post

Here here! It's getting way outta line.

But... So many fans would flip shit if their fighter was on the wrong end.. Let's face it, most people want wars and this would do away with a lot of that. It's crazy how so many exhausted fighters get a sudden boost of energy when they hear the words, "defend yourself!" Phone Post

Big John is definitely one of the biggest offenders, so is Big Dan Mongoloidola. That ref in the Rousey/Tate fight was pretty bad with his shitty monologue in the beginning of the fight also. Too many refs are trying to use the UFC to get famous and be the next Hollywood John McCarthy.

Why would it piss people off when Herb says "You gotta defend yourself" before a tko stoppage? Or "You gotta work" before standing the fight up?

if i was a fighter i would want to be notified of those things if he was deciding to make a call.
especially if his call is to end the fight that ive been training months towards..

When has this hurt a fight? Honest question, is the arguement that the reff can influence the fight just by speaking?

i would rather be vocal and in control if i were a ref.
wouldnt want to get used to not interupting the fight and keeping my mouth shut, next thing you know, people on the internet will say the ref doesnt do shit and sucks

Wrong, officials in basketball use their voices all the time to warn players. Phone Post

Only makes sense to warn fighters, the ref can't be certain of what they're doing or their condition.

Mir nog2 they would be 1-1 if not for the ref Phone Post

I totally agree with everything the thread starter said but pretty much in every combat sport you get warnings before a deduction.

In the 10-9 scoring system deducting a point is a big deal especially in three round fight but you do see warning in boxing and kick boxing before a deduction for the most part.

For sure though if they did just deduct points every time a foul occurred you probably would not have many fouls whether accidental or flagrant.

One of the rules/fouls is "Timidity", defined as avoiding contact, consistent dropping of mouthpiece, or faking an injury.

"Avoiding contact" is a tough one to judge at the spur of the moment, but if someone is doing this, then technically the ref has the right to warn the fighter.

I think youre way way off on this, man. I think a good ref in any sport needs to have dialogue with the participants. While i agree they shouldn't be motivating them to do anything, a warning that the fight is going to be stopped/stood up or a warning about a foul is completely reasonable and the mark of a good referee.
