have tried 2 different chiro's, ART, traction, electronic stimulation, no relief for the sciatica, which is constant while sitting, alleviated after standing/walking a while, but bending, twisting, much of anything is excruciating.
Ortho. will do conrtizone injection in a week.
Going to try an inversion table, may buy one of it helps.
anyone able to weigh in?
office chair sitting seems t be the culprit, aggravated by BJJ
Assuming you have had an MRI to diagnose that you have a disc protrusion at L5-S1 that is imposing on a nerve root. You sound like a textbook posterior derangement - flexion based activities make it worse (sitting, bending), extension based activities make it better (standing/walking).
I am assuming the cortisone injection the ortho is prescribing is an epidural injection. This will help settle the nerve root and potentially may help shrink the disc protrusion.
I am very selective with chiropractic involvement with disc issues, as many (not all) chiros are quick to adjust the spine, which can disrupt the disc even more if not done properly. I would recommend finding a physical therapist/physio who is skilled in the McKenzie approach and possibly Postural Restoration as well.
As for the other interventions:
- ART will be helpful to settle the muscle. There is some evidence that there are fascial connections to the disc wall and that myofascial release can help take tension off the protruding disc, but IMO, ART alone will not solve the issue.
- Traction will be beneficial in trying to help relocate the disc material back in place and opening up the space between the vertebrae. In conjunction with other appropriate techniques it can be beneficial.
- Electric stim will only help with symptoms while on the machine and may help with settling muscle spasms but will do nothing for the disc.
Thanks Matt!
You nailed it as far as my condition. Yes, MRI gave those results and exactly like you said as far as standing/walking vs sitting/bending.
I've been doing PT for a week, can only afford to keep it up til then end of the month when my insurance runs out.
Cannot say I notice any difference as yet from the PT.
Whatever benefit the cortisone shot may have had was negated by sitting at work for 3 days after, then I lost my job and therefore my insurance at month end.
Everyone says "no way" to back surgery but I wish I could see a light at the end of the tunnel.
Looking at mobilityWOD and strongerfitteryou.com, trying to figure out what of that doctrine may help me when I can no longer afford PT. I'm at a loss,
What is the therapist currently doing with you during physical therapy??
joint mobilizations
traction laying on stomach
