Enough with the BS about the first Fox fight

Tonights main event would've been an AWFUL first Fox event, it was TOO VIOLENT. It would've been far too much too soon for regular folks. The UFC is trying to legitimize our sport, part of the process of gaining legitimacy on a worldwide stage is introducing it to everyone, the masses. Unfortunately, the masses don't understand take downs, crack-head control or Josh Rosenthal's amazing refereeing tonight. The masses see unbridled violence and it scares them, and when they're scared they want things banned.

In our myopic view MMA isn't violent b/c we see technique, others see male cock fighting. When the UFC first came on the the scene people (ex: John McCain) were quick to launch a crusade against "human cockfighting", and like many crusades it was founded on misunderstanding.

The UFC is all too familiar with what happens when the masses don't understand our sport. They tailored an introductory bout that would most likely end in a quick FINISH. Both fighters had long records of finishing fights in the first round, and the UFC happened to pit them against each other*. Surprised?

As counterintuitive as this may sound a first round knockout is a far better introduction to MMA than a 5 round barn burner. People just aren't ready for a war yet, it's going to take a lot of user education to get fans on board. The Fox deal is about growing our sport, but more-so it's about marketing a product to a new audience. And the cardinal rule of marketing is to introduce your product in phases. The UFC knows all too well what happens when people see too much too soon. They're going to make sure it's well received and in IMHO they're doing damn good job.

Be patient, stop thinking DFW is mad, and sit and watch the fucking show, our sport is growing and it's gonna bea beautiful.

* Cain 6/9 fights in the first round (66%), JDS 10/12 fights within the first round (83%)

10ers gonna ten

I actually agree. Shogun's face was hamburger meat. Wayyy too much for the average first time viewer to get past Phone Post

Why does the first fox event have to be Griffin Bonnar?  Was the first tuf episode Griffin/Bonnar?  People need to realize that "griffin bonnar" could happen at any time during the 4 fights per year on fox so relax.

after every fucking event we gotta hear...  "man if only that fight was on fox".  Come on...

Strykr619 - End of the day the UFC's first event on Fox went well, Mark Levin of all people last Monday on his nationally syndicated radio show was all amped up about it.

^^^This. The first fight was like a free appetizer, just enough to get people interested in coming back for dinner.

UFC on FOX 2 in on Jan 28th. there is more fights to come.
