Jabbar does look a little taller in that picture. Knowing Walton, he was probably wearing sandals or even barefoot...lol.
I'm not positive how tall he really was, but I'm pretty sure he was taller than 6-11 he listed himself as.

I would think it's 7 foot, an inch or two shorter than Jabbar.

Probably.
I used to love to watch him play. All teamwork, outlet passes, inside passes, easy lay-ups.
He didn’t care how many points he scored. Just wanted to win.
He went 21-22 and scored 44 points in an NCAA tourney game. He could probably have approached that in every game if he was a ball hog. But he played under Wooden. Ball hogs sat on the bench.
…
ScreenName22 -That right hand Sampson landed was legit for a 7'4" dude.
I think it’s safe to say he would have beat the fuck out of Carmelo Anthony.
looks more like Walton’s knees gave out on him
Sampson was piecing everyone up, Walton saved the entire team.
BTW, the sound girl at 7:45 would get it.
UCLA listed their big guys under 7 feet on the stat sheet as a totally psych ploy. Then the opposition would get on the court and be like wtf
I remember watching it on tv - jerry sichting was a scrappy 6'1" with a 7'4" sampson on the block, and ralph just turned around and 2 pieced him twice - to which jerry was game, just lacked the reach to retaliate! Then bill scored the hip swing takedown and it was pile on
different time - I recall Parish only getting a personal foul for hammering laimbeer into bolivion..

Ralph even thumps Walton after the takedown.
BTW, that fight is the single greatest collection of fighting wasted basketball talent ever.
The two of them (ESPECIALLY SAMPSON) were all-time talents whose feet and ankles robbed us of their talents.
Sampson was an athletic 7’4 with skill.
David Robinson was a poor poor poor man’s Ralph Sampson.
Sampson one season shot 37.5% from 3.
He was incredibly graceful, skilled, athletic.
He was a surefire hall of famer, and he and Hakeem woudl have won MULTIPLE titles together.
yup - the twin towers were set to upset the balance in the 80’s. crazy to hear that according to ralph’s wiki page, he almost went into the 82 draft, but the first pick was determined by a coin toss & he stayed at virgina - the LAKERS won the toss (vs the san diego clippers) and took james worthy #1. talk about a different looking L.A. team
holy shit! at the end of this vid they said at the 84 draft, the blazers offered the #2 pick & drexler to the rockets for Ralph, which houston turned down. And you'd think the rockets would've probably taken jordan..
Golden age of the NBA.
Filled with super talented players who knew the game and team play. Also could play physical and real defense back then, and the league had real big men with skills. Today’s league is trash in comparison.

^I’m sure that I’m biased as a Bruin. But an injury-free Walton would have had a more stellar career than an injury-free Sampson imo.

How the hell were the lakers in the coin toss in 1982 draft? They made the playoffs in ‘81 didn’t they?

Mmmm tough call. Great discussion topic.
I think I can put together a strong case for Walton.
But it will have to wait a bit.

“The Lakers were the defending league champions, which normally results in a low draft position, but the Lakers had the top pick in the Draft thanks to a trade made years earlier. On February 15, 1980, the Lakers sent Don Ford and their top pick in the 1980 NBA Draft (who turned out to be Chad Kinch) in exchange for Butch Lee and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ top pick in the 1982 NBA Draft.[1] Prior to the implementation of the NBA Draft Lottery in 1985, the teams with the two worst records from the previous season would engage in a coin flip to determine which team would receive the top pick. Therefore, when Cleveland finished with the worst record in 1981-82, the Lakers took their place in the coin flip, and won out over the San Diego Clippers to earn the top pick.”

I don’t know that I disagree, actually.
I made my post because I tend to think that Walton got more of his actual prime years in than Sampson ever did, but I’ll admit that perhaps I dont’ have a good grasp of it.
I tend to think of the 78 blazers as Walton at least getting one good year of showing what he could do at the peak of his powers, but in retrospect he was only 25.
So, maybe you’re right. I’m certainly not going to call you wrong
To followup, compare their age 25 seasons (the year before they got hurt)
Walton Won a title and averaged 19/13/5/2.5
Sampson lost in the NBA finals and averaged 19/11/3.5/1.5 (playing next to Hakeem)
It’s a fascinating comparison, and all of our loss.
