Pretty common practice in boxing, how bout in MMA?
Basically every high ranking boxer has a lot of very easy wins in mismatches just to pad their record. But even for boxers with a lot of experience you'll see them "get rounds in" by not trying to finish a fight that they are easily in control of on purpose just so they can work on things from the gym and get more time in the ring. This happens on almost boxing event on ESPN or FSN, it's the norm in boxing. Personally, I think it's kind of stupid since the gym is what that is for and you don't take any risks like that, especially in a fight you're supposed to win.
I see it all the time in grappling and BJJ events as well. Guys racking up points when they are clearly good enough to get the finish if they wanted to. I haven't really seen this in the UFC or Pride, but how often do you think is does? Maybe a lot more of this happens in smaller shows where guys are trying to rebuild and get back into the big shows. thoughts?
did you think of this because of the Tua fight tonight? Man, I think he realized if he actually hit the guy, the fight would be over. So he didn't throw a legit power punch in the first round, then when he dropped him he made sure he didn't follow up. He was throwing maybe 1 hard punch a round.
That Tua fight was horrible. I was psyched for it, but when I saw the guy he was fighting, I was bummed. Horrible. Tua wasn't even trying. It was a good night of fights though. I liked the second fight, I LOVE it when guys are hot dogging and get KTFO. How embarrassing must that be?
my fucking roomate shut off my recording after r3 of the main event. It was getting good, too...Banks had survived the horrific first round, and was doing much better for himself.
Well, I have been watching a TON of boxing lately and you know every card has some mismatches and fighters often do this. I was watching the Tua fight and remember Atlas mentioning he might just be working on things. I think it's dumb to do that since that's what the gym is for, thats why you spar in training to try things out instead of doing that in competition.
For sure it happens in BJJ and grappling though, sometimes guys just rack up crazy points to put on a show.
I've seen a lot of MMA fights where guys play conservation just to play it safe, but I don't think that's the same thing as getting work in just for the sake of working on it.
Sak took a while with Gilles Arsene because Sak's knee was so fucked up he couldn't really bend it. If you watch the fight, when he finally submits him, he still barely bends his knee to get into position.
