In Art Davie’s book he writes about a 1951 challenge match from a team of Fadda’s students held at the Gracie Academy:
“Fadda’s team emerged victorious, making good use of their knowledge of foot locks, in which the opposition was lacking. Jose Guimaraes, one of Fadda’s pupils, actually choked Helio unconscious.”
At that point, Helio had never been unconscious, so he conciously decided, mid-match to ALLOW himself to go under --just once-- in order to see what it was like.

My Professor, Joao Paulo Martins, was a long time student of Oswaldo Fadda. Many accounts about this match between Fadda Academy and Gracie Academy have been perpetuated. He has told me, and many others, a few details.
According to Oswaldo Fadda, the often reported winning of 19 out of 20 matches by Fadda Academy is false. Although the Fadda students did fare well, match winnings were 11-9. And all of them very narrowly won on either side. Also, although Fadda students were known for leg locks, very few matches were won by leg lock. Helio was never choked out. At least not in that challenge.
