Fighter's without coaches?

I was just wondering how far a person can go in our sport without a good coach? I mean just how far do you think a guy can go with just a few people to box and roll with and having to learn from mostly video tapes?
Just wondering what ya'll thought.

tank abbot?

lol

thats right, were putting monkeys in a cage

i fought my first 2 fights without any experiance or training whatso ever. In fact the only exposure i ever had to any MMA fight was UFC, but i saw it wanted to do it and i did

zero, you think fighting is easy? I think there are alot of fighters that "wanted" to go further than their abilities, skills and training took them

I agree with sophos, I had 8 months of training then turned pro after 1 amatuer fight (Muay Thai - i had about 50 am boxing). My trainer and I parted due to family issues and I continued to fight and train. I have now had 60 pro fights(boxing, Muay Thai, MMA) and have MY trainer in my corner for 5 of them. All others i travel to by myself and pick up a corner at the venue. I am not 35 and I want to fight more then anything but know I cannot do so without a trainer. I am now currently talking with gentleman out of New York who is one of Carlson Gracie's top guys about that relationship.

Zero, no it is not brain surgery BUT, a bad attitude and athleticism will get you only so far.

Zero, is knowing and being able to execute crisp submissions instinct? What about being able to throw crisp, well-timed combinations. Drunks fighting at a bar is instinct, mma is both mentally and physically challenging. Is it brain surgery, no. Does it require a lot of learning and a good teacher to be great, yes.

I think a fighter without a coach can go to the top, but the opportunities are harder to come by without a big name team or manager pushing for you.

Zero is so wrong. Slick subs and crisp / effective standup is not all instinct. Brawling is, but it's 2 VERY different things.

It just seem's like no matter how talented a person is
without a coach that person will lose to lesser opponents just from the lack good training.

i trained myself before rick roufus moved to az..was really hard showed big time in conditioning and when i faced a harder opponent..i bought ever magazine and video i could find.i did have alot of guys at the gym to work with, but we all more or less trained our selves. i would go to different school all over to try to pick up as much as i could..i dont recomonded it for anybody

You could probably be pretty solid in B level competition

Hell, most of the guys i see in B shows look like all they have is about 6 months of video tape training!!!
