Funny Carlson Gracie Team Story

Awesome , thanks for the stories , I wish I had a BJJ academy to train at back in 1995 when I was training my ass off in Kung-Fu .

PTM2020 -  don't know his last name but he was brazillian, scary lookin, had bad english and built like a diesel.

Haha , must be him , I've seen a lot of photo's of all those guys training together ( mostly wearing tsunga's lol ) I always wondered why almost every dude in the photo is very well known but Sergio looking like a beast among beasts and I've never heard his name mentioned . Maybe he just trained and never fought on the big stage . Who knows ? maybe someone here knows him .

 hehe.

ok, here's a story I don't think I've ever told since back then in 96 or whatnot.

I had a couple of co-workers who just started training over there at Carlson's in W.LA when they first opened and they invited me to check out the classes since they knew I trained.
I showed up towards the end of the class and Sergio was one of the first guys to greet me.  He was scary lookin, muscles out the ears but seamed pretty cool.
My dickhead co-worker blurts out 'oh, he trains at machados'. in a very 'ha I gotcha'  type manner.      and I kinda saw sergio's demeanor change like 'oh really???"

I turn to my co-worker and was like 'dude, why you gotta say it like that?'

When I turn around Sergio had one of the whitebelts my size with him and motioned for me to roll with him.  I didn't even have a gi on but he just tells me to take off my shoes.  I feared for what might happen if I said no so I took off my shoes.

Anyways,  I was a whitebelt myself but I had about a year and a half of training in. We start out and Sergio is yelling instructions to the guy in a very competitive manner, The  guy didn't feel too strong,  they just finished class,  so I got mount pretty easily.
Sergio stops it before I could do anything else and grabs a blue belt who also just finished class and matches us up.

I would do pretty well against the blues at my school back, like... more stalemates then getting tapped.    and it was no different with this guy, again,  he was already tired from training.   he pulls guard, tries to sweep, I stuff, he goes for an armbar and I pull out and get to side control.

The tired blue belt was trying to reguard and I was stuffing it fairly easily and had a good crossface on him.
I'm feeling really good about myself and then I look up.
Sergio was taking off the hoody he had on and was fixing the tape on his wrists as if preparing to go with me next.

The fear of God came over me and I sorta let up a little, and the guy reguards and gets the armbar.

Sergio, is like 'ohhh,  good...good'  and puts his hoody back on.

He hands me a flyer, the one below, and invites me to come back tomorrow to take a class.

Anyways, me & my dickhead co-worker took an early lunch the next day because we heard that's when the team practice was, and we walked in literally seconds before seeing  Wallidji's head go through the wall.

I ended up staying at Machados.

 Got it

THANKS!!!

these are AWESOME!!!

Thats Sergio in the hat. Top left next to R.Medieros.

I may have to ammend my first story.  I always thoght it  was Murillo that Wallid was going with when his head went through the wall but now I'm thinking it was the dude with the kneepads, bottom 2nd from left.

I remember the one time I saw Alan Goes there, he had just finished training and was chewing on a full stem of Ginger!!   Just chewin on it like taffy.

This post has made my day. It literally brought back that feeling of years past when you went into a different academy and it was like stepping into a rival gang's turf and they knew. Fuck, I haven't had that feeling in over 12 yrs. The smile on my face is unbelievable right now.

Exactly! Those were the good old days. The opposition would be respectful and have a smile on their face, but in their mind they'd be thinking "Now I'll show you." The above story was so Carlson like. Lol. White belt from rival school shows up and gets paired up with equivalent belt/skill level. If rival student wins he has to face the pecking order until he is beaten badly. Once rival student gets beaten badly Carlson yells "Stop! Good." Carlson then shakes rival student's hand and pats him on the back. Lol.

ttt for more stories / photo's etc

His name is Sergio Cohen. He was a purple belt at the time, and a decent instructor. I think he moved back to Brazil. Phone Post

When i stayed at Andrehs house and Rey Diogos house ,Rey showed me a tape from Carlsons Academy in Los Angeles.

It was no gi sparring with Murillo Bustamante , Rey Diogo , Wallid ,Vitor Belfort ,Pablo Popovitch and some other guys.

Carlson Gracie was giving them instructions ,it was INTENSE sparring -Carlson Gracie Style

If i remember corectly ,Wallid hit the wall but continued to roll , it was funny...

At the end of that training they took the legendary picture.
The picture is called Carlson Gracie Team on the link below

^ Yeah, that pic is amazing.

I watched Rey & Wallid roll (like 12 years ago). Funny thing I recall is Wallid was very fastidious before he would roll. Not what one would expect. Very meticulous about his gi and preparation and put on some lotion and get a sip of water, put on a different gi top --all these idiosyncrasies and Rey would make fun of him in Portuguese the whole time.

Then it was ON! Those guys have one speed: finals of the Mundials. Possibly two of the worst people at "light rolling" BJJ has ever produced. Not that they have ever TRIED light rolling. It was a battle of pure will. Carlson produced a lot of guys who were very mentally tough.

I recall Rey once described Wallid as a "pig". I didn't know what he meant. He explained Wallid "roots" the way a pig does to get into a position. First just his nose then more and more of him until he has broken through.

I've always remembered that for some reason.

Who was that one dude. I forget his name but iirc he fought in a couple of the early ufc's back then.   He got the 2 bulldogs tattooed on his chest (or was it his back)  Also built like a mac truck.  He wasn't brazillian though but he was also training at the wla school.
