Getting a gi adjusted/fitted?

Has anyone ever done this?

I'm 5'8" so I need an A2 to be competition legal, but it's huge around my middle/waist and i'm just begging to get brabo choked. I imagine the place would open up the lapels and take off some there but I was wondering if anyone had ever tried this and if they recommend for/against it.

Thanks!
Hillary

just gain a few lbs

nogidavid - you mean brabo choked?

Posting when tired=bad.

I've never heard of it being done personally but I'm sure taking it into a tailor would be a good place to start, silly as it may sound. There is a tailor not to far from where I live here in Missouri and i was surprised to see that they were able to repair a couple torn up gi's of mine so I would think that a decent one should be able to refit a gi.

If not my other idea would be involve talking to the makers of the gi itself and get their input.

Hillary - You may be interested in talking to Egor at Redstar (http://redstarbjj.com/) out of Toronto. He does a lot of custom gi tailoring, including pants and sleaves.

I`m an A-3 for sleaves and pant legs, and an A-2 everywhere else, so I feel your pain.

I think that Wallid had got in trouble for a tailored gi when fighting Royce once. I'd think that as long as it still passed the IBJJF standards that you'd be ok.

jimmy pedro has mentioned getting his judo uniforms tailored for a better fit. he actually has a tailor that he recommends, but im sure that most tailors can do it. if u know anyone in the garment industry, then even better, cos then u can use the cheap sweatshop labour, wouldnt cost more than $20/hr

Hillary doesn't have a Gi deal? Call Shoyoroll,Troia,Dragao,etc.. or something and get yourself some fweebies.

I'm sponsored by Jiu Jitsu Pro Gear so I get Koral gis. I'm super, super lucky to have this deal and not cocky enough to think that Koral should custom some gis for me. :)

I wouldn't think it would do any harm to ask if it's possible. Don't push the issue but maybe there's something else that they could do that might work.

If not sounds like you're back with the tailor idea which isn't bad either

I talked to Joe Padilla of Padilla and Sons and said a lot of dry cleaners also have tailors that could do a fine job. You just have to make sure they understand the uber reinforcements are very important.

I'd be interested in how much alterations end up costing.

duct tape does the trick! lol

I think you should have a lace-trimmed gi for when you enter the men's comps. Imagine the ignomy of getting triangled by a chick in a "girly" outfit. Of course that would border on sadism.... :-D

My instructor used to get his tailored down. I think he just went to the dry cleaners. They have to use heavy stitching but it has held together.

Come to think of it, another buddy of mine did as well so I reckon it is a more common occurrence than we would figure.

Dry Cleaners usually can do it... as mentioned, just show them to strongly reinforce the seams and describe what it is used for...

PWNED!!!!!!!! hahahaha

i go to a brazilian/japanese family in town that tailors.

i shrink the hell out of an a4 atama and have them tailor it. EMPHASIZE that they put xtra stitching back in.

had one last 7 years w/ consistent training. so hope that helps.

you can also have some judo manufacturers make a gi to your specs, but that's more loot.
