Glover Teixeira had a rough time last Saturday night, losing his first fight in nearly nine years, for the title, getting his labrum torn by a whizzer, and having his eye poked, twice.

In an interview with Guilherme Cruz, Teixeira talked about the hard night, starting with the eye poke.

"I don’t think it was intentional, but the referee needs to start putting some pressure on who does that," said Teixeira. "I was a little afraid to close the distance and get poked in the eye again and maybe stop the fight. The second eye poke really scared me because I thought it could hurt my eye.

"I knew I was losing the rounds but we always believe that one punch can change it, but it’s hard to do it when you have to worry about getting poked in the eye. I don’t think it was intentional, but you have to be careful with that."

"That shoulder crank in the first round really hurt me. I regret letting him do that, it was a big mistake. But there’s nothing I can do about it now. After the first round, I had no punching power, and I had to push him with my left arm in the clinch, so I pretty much tired my both shoulders. I have to evolve in a lot of aspects of the fight, there’s not much to say."

"I want this rematch. I will train hard to get this opportunity one day, and I will believe in me and fix my mistakes. I want two or three more fights to get to the title again."

I'm glad he spoke up so its not just us complaining about it. Maybe this will pressure for some refs to say something next fight. Phone Post 3.0

would have been better for glover if he had stayed quiet

Why? He said he was scared to engage for fear of having his eye damaged, but also said he felt it was unintentional.

Is no one every suppose to answer questions after a fight, lest they look like they are whining?

This. His answers are perfect IMO. Not whining or excuses. Yet speaks his mind about what happened. He blamed himself for the shoulder crank and didn't ask for an immediate rematch and blablabla. What more do you want? Total silence only?

And yes, something needs to be done about those eye poke threats Jones uses. Come on! Dude is the top dog at LHW by far but this shit needs to stop.

You mean it would of been better if jones had stayed quiet about the eye pokes instead of making that idiotic video Phone Post 3.0

Good response from glover and here's hoping for a speedy recovery! Phone Post 3.0

I also think the ref needs to do more when a fighter constantly spits out his mouth piece when the heat gets put on him. Phone Post 3.0

good response by glover

i like that he highlighted that the threat of the eye poke impacted the fight and not only the 2 actual eye pokes

rules need to change to disallow the threat of eye pokes and the refs need to take a stronger stand on implementing it

This will descend into anarchy quickly.. Phone Post 3.0

He also said he had no punching power after the first round, and the eye pokes were in the 2nd round. So closing the distance wouldn't have done him much good anyway. Phone Post 3.0

^also, jones closed the distance for him, and we saw how that went for Glover. Phone Post 3.0

Good on Glover. Hope he has a speedy recovery with his shoulder, would love to see him.back in there soon. Phone Post 3.0

Here's Jack Slack's take on the eyepokes:

Fighting Dirty

It would be unfair of me to praise Jones' incredible shutting down of his one dimensional, but dangerous opponent, without stating my distaste for his dirtier methods. Jones got away with murder at UFC 172, extending his hands towards Teixeira's face and pacifying Teixeira with the threat of running—eye first—onto one of Jones' deliberately splayed fingers.

The use of the lead hand to maintain distance and press the face isperfectly permissible in MMA. In fact, I love it. There's nothing cooler than watching Jones maintain the distance on the side of his opponent's head, or land an oblique kick to the lead leg as he holds his opponent back.

What I take umbrage with is the obvious threat of the eye poke.

When Big John McCarthy is in the cage during Jones' matches he immediately makes clear that the hand should come out closed or with the fingers closed and the palm vertical. Dan Mirgoliotta made a right mess of the main event at UFC 172 by utterly failing to take control of the fight. Jones realized that Big Dan was not going to punish him, and he walked over the referee as a result.

The face of the opponent can be posted on with the hand upright and the fingers tightly held together. Jones can axe kick and spinning elbow with ease, I severely doubt that he can't learn to hold his fingers together and upright when extending his lead hand.

What's more, the palm can be posted on the opponent's face with a closed hand. Make a fist, bend it back at the wrist and you'll find that your fist opens slightly to expose the palm, but that your fingers are still curled to your hands.

The problem isn't that Jones doesn't know this though. The problem is that Jones opts to fight dirty when the referee in with him isn't authoritative enough to take action. We have long known that you get a free eye poke in any fight—Josh Koscheck has been using that get out of jail free card for years—but with a repeat offender like Jones or Koscheck, a good referee should be jumping on that nonsense from the start.

Conclusions

In spite of the silliness with eye pokes, I was enormously impressed with Jon Jones at UFC 172...

True. He has only poked Gus and Glover by accident, though. I'm sure now he'll be more careful and whatnot.

I just don't like when people think his wrestling technique is "dirty" or he has multiple eye pokes in his career.

That's ridiculous.

its super dirty, and the multiple eye pokes against many of his opponents are well documented.

check out any of the gif threads, it's all there to see.

Wut? There was an eye poke 2 minutes into the fight.
Pretty sure you're wrong. I would have to watch it again but it doesn't matter either way. They were after the shoulder crank. Phone Post 3.0

Is no one every suppose to answer questions after a fight, lest they look like they are whining?

and he is silly to say it's unintentional.

Hands out, used to block a guy from closing distance with fingers extended.

The reason it makes them hesitant is due to the possibility of an eye poke.

So that's why they do it.

The resulted eye poke is pretty much on purpose.

Lol at the people that can't see the gray area being used here. Even if someone isn't poking at your eyes they can use the need to move forward and just turn it into a hazzard by stalking your eyes. You don't need to touch superman with kryptonite just keep it between you and him (no I am not comparing anyone to superman)
