A. Silva is African.
Lyoto is not black, he's Brazilian.
Strange Brew -His dad is Japanese and his mom is Portuguese, and Lyoto was born and raised in Brazil.iShatswhenWeidmanBassoondSilva -Skmiasma -Wasn't he born in Brazil though?
He was born in Brazil but is of Japanese origin no??
Machida is a half breed.
Kings21 - Yes but its not exactly on par with mixing up names or spouting off about the michael jordans of BJJ.I agree. Just thought it was unnecessary and silly to comment that way.
Harlem Savoy -
I understand what he was intending to say, but his words were poorly chosen. It's not like this is the first time he's spoken with foggy references.
There was nothing foggy about it.
Lyoto is a Brazilian who has Japanese ancestry. He's no more Asian than Ben Henderson.
His comment was "first Asian"
Technically, lyoto and BJ are also Asian.
If he said, "first mainland Asian from overseas, etc" that would be right.
He didn't explain and it made me cringe.

Honestly I think he is correct.
lyoto and Bj are not asian.
Being born in asia makes you asian.
I thought it was fine. He simply said Asian, so it seemed logical to assume he was referring to nationality, not ethnicity or heritage.
Americans are the worst at assuming or claiming they are Italian, Irish, etc., when in reality they are American by nationality. In the rest of the world, people most often refer to their nation of origin, not their ancestral origin, so what Goldie said makes even more sense in that regard.
He also forgot about Bruce Lee.

How are Lyoto and BJ 'Asian'?
Lyoto's mom and dad are Brazilian citizens, and Lyoto was born in Brazil. Lyoto is Brazilian, period. He's no more Asian than Marcus Davis is Irish.
Calling BJ Asian is laughable. His dad is an American white guy and his mom is a third generation Asian-American. She was born in the USofA. How does that make BJ Asian? Ben Henderson is more 'Asian' than BJ Penn. At least his mom was born in Korea.
Lyoto was the first Japanese-Brazilian champion, if you really want to get technical. That's about it.

If true, I would assume it was on sovereign US land (in other words, on a US military base). That still makes him by an American by birthright citizenship.
LyotoBundy -Bendo, Machida, Penn.. halfies.
TKZ.. full blood.
Does Penn even count as a halfie if his mom is a 3rd generation Korean-American?
How about...
First Korean?
Not this again
Korea is in the region defined as Asia, so Koreans are Asians.
Since there hasn't been a UFC champion from that region, calling them Asians makes sense from a marketability standpoint.
Now you get my joke. Took 40 posts to see I was just pushing buttons. ;)
