Hey All, I need a good BJJ gym for a family member who wants to start training. He lives in Murray Hill. Any suggestions? Thanks! DHG

Renzo's??
Anyone familiar with Unity BJJ?
Unity bjj would be my choice but it's a competition school with some of the hardest training there is. Might be a bit much for a beginner. Murillo Santana is the coach and the miyaos are prolly there training every hour it's open.
renzos is the most expensive I'm sure and easy on beginners. Good coaches but the buzz here is mostly John danaher who doesn't like to teach beginners but the other coaches are igor and Gregor gracie and rolles gracie I'm pretty sure so it's legit. I heard they don't let u roll for a few months tho.
marcelos is home to the greatest ever marcelo garcia but he doesn't teach much but still a great school. Bernardo Faria prolly teaches most the classes as well as Matheus Diniz and Paul I forget his last name. Prolly a great school for both beginner and competitor.
Alliance nyc is ran by Fabio Clemente and another top notch school as alliance is prolly the most successful team in bjj. Marcelos is also an alliance affiliate.
Id suggest taking a free class at each and seeing which feels the best. I think unity is the closest to them but they're all actually in that little area lol but if they don't mind the hard training at unity and wanna really train bjj and not be baby'd into then there's no place like unity, prolly the closest thing to brazil. The others kinda cater to the Manhattan money making crowd it feels like, where unity is just come and go hard.
I think Vitor Shaolin still has a school there too unless he moved it to New Jersey.
There's a guy thats been getting some buzz out that way. Renzo. Renzo Gracie they call him.
Marcelos and Unity are the top competitive BJJ schools in NYC.
I train at MG's in NYC and it's great though I don't compete, i mostly train for fun. I'm sure you can't go wrong with Unity, Renzo, Vitor Shaolin etc. I'm sure i'm missing some other great academies. What are you looking for in training?
I mean the real question is does he want a school in manhattan or closer to Murray hill.

Thanks Brother, this is the kind of insight I was hoping for!

Get in shape. Learn self defense. I don't think he's interested in competing

Closer to Murray Hill is ideal but he wants a gym that's a good fit for him as someone who has been inactive for a while.
Vitor shaolins isn't too far, really cool spot too I've been there for open mat a bunch
