To be honest, it looked like Cooper felt that Nino was going to use the belt grip to take his back, tried to reposition, realized it wasn't going to happen, and rolled out.

well, yes. when he has that grip he typically is pulling you so hard to the direction of the hook sweep and there is the very real danger of him taking your back
when he gets that belt grip its a constant threat of being 'hook' swept and your back being taken with nino, thats been my experience, i guess only coop can really answer this.
