Grappling matches are "fights"?

A friend of mine called me to tell me Gordon Ryan won a fight yesterday so i inquired further “Did he win a real fight?” And then he broke the news to me it wasn’t a fight after all it was a submission match… i cant believe after all these years we are still doing this!

It’s a joke and it makes the entire grappling community look like clowns. If you want to really fight, go have a fight. Otherwise shut the fuck up about your grappling match. Wrestlers never called their matches fights and wrestling is harder than any other type of grappling.

This is a good idea man… guy’s talking trash at the bar all “c’mon! let’s do this” then be like “al’ight” slips off flips as the guy goes wide eyes looking to back out but it’s too late you’re already shooting the double or rolling for a kneebar or clipping him with a coors light bottle.

I fucking hate this. If my students call matches fights I correct them immediately.

The only weird area is the common nomenclature for a non tournament match between two guys too good to do the brackets is super fight, inherited from ADCC which I guess took it from the early UFC’s. So I will use the term in that specific circumstance. But also not for one of these new era all single match cards.

Person #1: “Are you going to compete at the tournament Saturday?”

Person #2: “yes”

Person #1: “oh, are you doing your x weight class bracket?”

Person #2: “no, I just have a super fight”

This is the only acceptable context. I honestly don’t even like it that much, but I tolerate it because it’s the parlance of times. I will not abide calling a grappling match a fight though.

only people who call it a fight do it to sound bad ass without actually having a fight Most who say this have never had a real fight

I wonder, is this a thing that happens in a gym that actually has active fighters? Because the fighters were always treated with a bit of reverence when I was coming up. And our people still do because they have a healthy understanding of what our fighters could do to them…

I guess it helps that our best grapplers are also our fighters so there aren’t any berimboloing purple belts tapping the MMA fighters and going home to tell their girlfriend how they could kill people in the UFC.

I feel like this is a symptom of modern BJJs push to have no respect for anyone ever under any circumstances and say anything related to respect makes a gym a cult

I might say I “fought” someone because it’s simply easier than saying competed with or grappled against or whatever but I agree, a submission grappling match is not a fight and should not be called one. It’s a “match.” It’s no more a fight than wrestling.

I agree they aren’t fights but logically I can see how someone gets to that opinion.

Boxing/MMA/Kickboxing are seen as a fight, it’s two people throwing punches until either person wins on points or someone is knocked unconscious.

Submission grappling is two people grappling until someone wins on points or someone submits/ goes unconscious/ something breaks.

Both technically have the major implication of potentially being separated from consciousness or receiving some sort of major damage.

Wrestling technically doesn’t have that because it’s more points and pins .

But yes they definitely aren’t fights but logically you can see how someone might see it that way.

I’d say high level grappling is a fight. Maybe there isn’t punching in the face but a high level grappler would beat most people in mma or a street fight

Is boxing a fight?
